I'm not sure I understand.

Family Guy is definitely not "secretly" attempting to corrupt anyone.

I’ve seen the South Park hate, but I haven’t seen the Family Guy like. They lean more towards the later seasons of American Dad when it got really weird.

I wouldn't call myself an avid watcher or anything (in my country there's a late night channel that plays a block of American cartoons like Bob's Burgers and American Dad that I look in on from time to time), but last time I looked in on American Dad - there were a few episodes in a row where they kept making references to 2000s numetal like Papa Roach and Linkin Park. Idk if it was suppose to be some odd in joke or a major fan of those tunes just joined the writing staff; but that was kind of weird to me.

As an American, that’s kind of weird to me as well. Most of the numetal they’re referencing haven’t been cool since the late 90s-late 2000s. And the episodes making the references were made after numetal had faded from popularity.

"Secretly"?

(Anonymous) 2023-05-20 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, I thought I was missing something when so much family guy randomly showed up on my dash.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-20 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, I think its looped back round to being a 'liking ironically' thing for some reason on Tumblr.

I unironically like the early seasons, but know so little of the later seasons to even know what’s going in most of the gifs and images they’re using on my dash. But I guess I can get the ironic like people have for Family Guy lately.

The same all goes for American Dad.

da, and yeah, the first 3-4 seasons of Family Guy are pretty good actually. not nearly as subversive as the pearl-clutching housewives of the 90s made it out to be. but I straight up quit around season 13 when it went the way of the Simpsons - samey jokes, bad tropes, terrible execution of concepts.

now, American Dad otoh has gotten much better with time, if only because it took a sharp left into pure Python-esque absurdism. my favorite episodes early on were the weird-as-fuck christmas eps (especially the apocalypse) so when all the episodes got just as weird, I was already signed up for it. they're not all hits, but when they're on they're on.

Yeah, Family Guy was never “subversive,” because it was never really trying to say that much. It started out making fun of “family show” tropes, which was fun while it lasted. But they amped up the pointless meanness and ramped down the effort until entire seasons could be summed up as “Watch Peter and Brian drunkenly fuck shit up! Did you know that Meg’s ugly and gross, and Stewie’s hella gay?” It’s good for the memes though.

imho classic simpsons > south park > family guy/american dad. tumblr people probably like family guy for the reaction images, kind of like spongebob.

South Park is a funnier show than Family Guy but it is also genuinely pernicious in a way Family Guy isn't

(Anonymous) 2023-05-20 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Genuinely not trying to sound dumb, but can you give some examples of how it's harmful?

(Anonymous) 2023-05-20 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr is obsessing over Family Guy?? Huh. Looks like I follow the right parts of tumblr because I haven't seen even a single mention of this. Good for me.

I don't have anything good to say about the little I saw of South Park, either, but Family Guy is such trash.
