Oh my god, I thought I was missing something when so much family guy randomly showed up on my dash.

yeah, I think its looped back round to being a 'liking ironically' thing for some reason on Tumblr.

I unironically like the early seasons, but know so little of the later seasons to even know what’s going in most of the gifs and images they’re using on my dash. But I guess I can get the ironic like people have for Family Guy lately.

The same all goes for American Dad.

da, and yeah, the first 3-4 seasons of Family Guy are pretty good actually. not nearly as subversive as the pearl-clutching housewives of the 90s made it out to be. but I straight up quit around season 13 when it went the way of the Simpsons - samey jokes, bad tropes, terrible execution of concepts.

now, American Dad otoh has gotten much better with time, if only because it took a sharp left into pure Python-esque absurdism. my favorite episodes early on were the weird-as-fuck christmas eps (especially the apocalypse) so when all the episodes got just as weird, I was already signed up for it. they're not all hits, but when they're on they're on.

Yeah, Family Guy was never “subversive,” because it was never really trying to say that much. It started out making fun of “family show” tropes, which was fun while it lasted. But they amped up the pointless meanness and ramped down the effort until entire seasons could be summed up as “Watch Peter and Brian drunkenly fuck shit up! Did you know that Meg’s ugly and gross, and Stewie’s hella gay?” It’s good for the memes though.
