It's fine to not like Jordan Peele's movies, for sure, they can be real fucking weird and that's not everyone's jam, but to not like them because they're too message-y is a little sus.

Exactly what I was coming down here to comment. It smacks of "I don't mind those [marginalized group]s existing, I just don't approve of their lifestyle/don't want their beliefs shoved in my face." Where sub in your group of choice; blacks, queers, immigrants, etc.

"Too messagey" is basically a dogwhistle at this point.

Not liking something isn't inherently racist. But disliking because movies they have messages about race IS a bit sus.

Ironically I've seen people disliking Us and Nope because their message is broader than race and more hmmm delicately handled.

Eh, I feel like that's perfectly valid. Like, I enjoy horror movies, but I watch them for the jumpscares and for the stuff that gets my heart pounding. I legit don't want a horror movie that's "message-y" because that's not what I watch horror movies for.

Nah. Sometimes one wants to watch horror films to get their heart pounding, not the get a deep and meaningful message about the racism (or whatever) in the USA.

I don't think so. There are a lot of people who don't tolerate being preached at and actively avoid that from everyone when they're looking for entertainment.

I have my ideas about right and wrong already, thanks. There are situations when I want to hear about other people's, but I certainly am not volunteering for anyone to try to manipulate me into believing what they believe. And that's what a lot of message-fiction amounts to. Not just the kind written by skeezy, gay-hating Christians.

Of course, there's also the fact that a lot of message-fiction will sacrifice storytelling to making sure the plot only says what the author thinks it should say. But that's sort of a different gripe. When I let myself get into a story, I feel like my defenses come down to a certain extent. I feel betrayed when someone tries to take that as an opportunity to propagandize me, and regardless of whether I think their beliefs are laudable or abhorrent, I don't forgive that, or them.

Yes it has clear theme of racism and slavery, but it does not preach you anything. It just has message.

How are you defining "has message," then?

Because I'm pretty sure most things that do evangelize just see themselves as 1. having a message and 2. trying to communicate it to others.

When you feel "betrayed" by a movie saying "racism is bad" then the only reasonable conclusion is that you're racist. Why not own it? I thought you people were proud of being ~anti-woke or whatever.

*rolls eyes* You seem intent on finding enemies everywhere. I don't especially care what the "message" of this particular movie is. I might agree with the specific point. What I don't agree with, in general, is the motivations behind wrapping political arguments in entertainment. There are stories that have no message at all, and there are stories that have a moral bent because this how the author sees the world but they aren't making any particular effort to convince you that they're right. And then you have stories where it feels more like the story is there to keep you listening and open to the message. I make no apologies about avoiding stories based on that last thing, with little regard for whether what they're trying to propagandize for is something I think is good or bad. Because they're assuming they don't need consent for something that they very much do.
