IMO, Us is less heavy-handed than Get Out and Nope is even less heavy-handed. Nope is also just so entertaining, I hope you give it a try, OP.

Nope is the first one I've actually wanted to watch, but I don't do horror. I've been tempted to watch it anyway it just looks so entertaining.

It's really fun! There are couple of jump scares and couple of scenes that are really disturbing, but this movie has such great Jurassic Park and western vibes

I feel as though Get Out does give an indication what it's about? To me, it's a very evocative title. I'm with you in the other two titles, though. They tell me nothing and could be titles for movies of any other genre.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-23 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean the title suggests that the movie contains a scary situation and you should get out? Unlike every other horror movie? I'm not sure that's a helpful descriptor.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-23 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ayrt

It's more specific to me than that. It gives me a feeling of claustrophobia and urgency in the sense of time running out. I wouldn't expect a slasher film from this title, for example, or a supernatural horror story.

Dunno. I think Us is such a clever title that tells the whole theme of the movie beforehand.
Also I think this short titles warn us that this movies aren't straightforward horror. So if you want to watch Hatchet Massacre or Ghosts of Spooky Manor or something you are probably not going to try watching Nope.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-23 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's fine to not like Jordan Peele's movies, for sure, they can be real fucking weird and that's not everyone's jam, but to not like them because they're too message-y is a little sus.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-23 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Why so?

(Anonymous) 2023-05-24 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly what I was going to say! Complaining that the movies are "too messagey" is definitely not helping their claim to not be racist.

Exactly what I was coming down here to comment. It smacks of "I don't mind those [marginalized group]s existing, I just don't approve of their lifestyle/don't want their beliefs shoved in my face." Where sub in your group of choice; blacks, queers, immigrants, etc.

"Too messagey" is basically a dogwhistle at this point.

Hahaha this.
Not liking something isn't inherently racist. But disliking because movies they have messages about race IS a bit sus.

Ironically I've seen people disliking Us and Nope because their message is broader than race and more hmmm delicately handled.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-24 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I feel like that's perfectly valid. Like, I enjoy horror movies, but I watch them for the jumpscares and for the stuff that gets my heart pounding. I legit don't want a horror movie that's "message-y" because that's not what I watch horror movies for.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-24 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. Sometimes one wants to watch horror films to get their heart pounding, not the get a deep and meaningful message about the racism (or whatever) in the USA.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-24 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think so. There are a lot of people who don't tolerate being preached at and actively avoid that from everyone when they're looking for entertainment.

I have my ideas about right and wrong already, thanks. There are situations when I want to hear about other people's, but I certainly am not volunteering for anyone to try to manipulate me into believing what they believe. And that's what a lot of message-fiction amounts to. Not just the kind written by skeezy, gay-hating Christians.

Of course, there's also the fact that a lot of message-fiction will sacrifice storytelling to making sure the plot only says what the author thinks it should say. But that's sort of a different gripe. When I let myself get into a story, I feel like my defenses come down to a certain extent. I feel betrayed when someone tries to take that as an opportunity to propagandize me, and regardless of whether I think their beliefs are laudable or abhorrent, I don't forgive that, or them.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-24 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Get Out isn't preachy though IMHO...
Yes it has clear theme of racism and slavery, but it does not preach you anything. It just has message.

Yeah, no.

When you feel "betrayed" by a movie saying "racism is bad" then the only reasonable conclusion is that you're racist. Why not own it? I thought you people were proud of being ~anti-woke or whatever.

That simply is not usually treated as the function of a title.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-24 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Your argument is that titles aren't usually there to give the viewer a clue as to what the movie is about? What are they for, then?

To set a mood? That's what I like to do with my titles, anyway (and why I'm still salty that Tom Stoppard's The Invention of Love is kind of a boring play; that title was wasted IMO).

US is my favorite of his films. I can't stop thinking about it!

If you like interesting and well-thought-out imagery, I highly recommend it. It's a very original concept.

For what it’s worth, Nope is actually pretty funny.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-24 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I hate almost all one-short-word titles for that reason, but "Nope" is particularly egregious. It also doesn't help that I got spoiled for the twist by someone on Twitter who just had to rave about it and thought they were being sneaky by not naming the movie. It was pretty obvious. That's not the movie's fault, but I'm still bitter.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-24 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's gotten to a point where I find cryptic titles pretty obnoxious, too.

I mean, on the one hand, we have fairly little money going to movies that don't have some sort of preexisting name recognition. And on the other, it's gotten considerably harder than it was to tell from the title whether I care to find out more about an unknown movie.

Which means I either waste time going "what's this? What's that?" with umpteen movies that I will not follow through and watch to find the one or two that do appeal to me, or I just go "you know what, forget it. I'm too busy for this."
