Does anyone else have parents that are weird about the internet?
(Anonymous) 2023-05-25 12:14 am (UTC)(link)And if I mention something that's not educational, but just some random discussion on Reddit or something, and say it was just a discussion people were having, I get criticized for even reading it at all because it was on the internet and that somehow makes it bad? Yet having a discussion about the same subject with neighbors or random people at the grocery store is completely different to them because it's in person, and I just...don't get it.
I guess it's just boomers being boomers lol but it's annoying.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-25 02:49 am (UTC)(link)Now fair warning, I can be a difficult asshole when people pull stuff like this, but the approach I take would be extremely polite and calm, but condescending. Gently, with a smile, remind your parents that it's 2023 and technology and communication has moved on since their youth. Remind them that every single reputable paper, magazine, scholarly journal and every single respected news outlet in the developed world has had an established online presence for YEARS. Chuckle indulgently when your Dad cites FB as his source for anything ("Oh, dad!"), ditto when your Mom mentions blogs. ("Wow, do people still write blogs in this day and age?")
And if they're the kind of parents who ever need your help in anything remotely computer or new technology related, cut them off ASAP. You don't need to be their tech support if they treat you like an idiot. One last thing: stay in school, study hard, aim for financial independence and anything else that means they don't have any power over you. Your life will be a lot less annoying if you've got the upper hand.
