I've definitely found myself almost scrolling past what I thought was a bunch of bullshit to get to the recipe only to realize it was a detailed explanation of why you should use this kind of cocoa powder instead of that kind, and that's actually really helpful. Some cookbooks do that (e.g., America's Test Kitchen) but a lot don't. I don't consider either format more or less reliable. You have to sort through some crap either way.
