It's not a question of finding recipes. It's a question of finding reliable sources for recipes that are trustworthy and don't suck. 98% of recipe sites on the Internet, the recipes are basically worthless because it's just the most basic bare-bones recipe possible, or even worse they come up with some weird crappy new idea they've never even tried. And reviews don't help because recipe reviewers are worse than useless. There's only a handful of sites that are even usable. And you can't Google for recipes either because you'll only find SEO spam.

So the goal with buying cookbooks is, if you find one that's reliable and worth it's salt, that's a whole buttload of recipes that you know you can rely on and even adapt, and you can generalize the techniques, and so on. And you can also pick ones that are tailored to your cooking style, whatever cuisine you're interested in, etc.

Reviews are just as much a mixed bag as online recipes. Just about every one I look at has someone who didn't have 3/4ths of the ingredients and subbed them and then hated the recipe they didn't actually make and give it 1 star. My favorite was the person who thought carrots had too much sugar, so they subbed them. In a carrot cake.

I know a lot of people who love cooking as a hobby, and this was true before the proliferation of recipe blogs - they buy cookbooks because they love browsing through cookbooks the way people like reading novels. Partly to enjoy the photos, or get inspiration, or just because they're interested in food/cooking/travel/other cuisines. They're not always buying them as a source for recipes.

I like the convenience of online recipes but personally, I get sick of people putting in their damn life story/memoirs without a prominent "jump to recipe" link, I'm tired of magazine worthy shots of raw ingredients (I know what flour looks like, ffs) and I'm also tired of videos that are on auto play, pop up ads and pop up solicitations to get on their e-mail newsletter, etc. etc.

I don't process text on a screen as well as I do in print. I have no idea why, but recipes online I have to print off if I have a hope of following it. And now I don't have a printer, so I like to try out different cookbooks.

I do not understand why so many cookbooks are not spiral bound. They don't stay open and it's so frustrating!

The only reason I could see myself buying a cookbook (as I usually use online blogs etc) is because I would want to write any changes/adjustments I make to a recipe on paper. That's what ends up happening anyway. I'll read a recipe, write it down on a scrap, take note of changes I make, and then loose the scrap lol.

But I could see if there's nice compendium if you will of recipes that are hard to find, specific to a certain kind of cuisine that's not too common or is a chef whose work you really like. I do think about buying some books sometimes, but then O think, I can probably find them online. And in some cases, I can't. So... that's one reason (or two).

I think depends on the cookbook. I've received all of mine as gifts, but I bought a copy of The Sioux Chef for a friend who expressed interest in Sean Sherman's work. Aside from her interest, my purchase at least partly supported a local (to me) chef. So if there's an angle like that involved, I will buy a cook book (or at least consider such a purchase).

Same. I fell out of video games in my late teens, early 20s when my dad got sick and passed. Then I started watching twitch videos in my mid-20s and slowly started getting back into them, but I still prefer watching certain streamers play them instead, especially story-based games.

FUCK YES.
I loved the books because DRAGONS!!!
But all the gender stuff and forced pairing up really got to me when I read them as kid. I hated all that crap, plus the classism and whatnot. DRUDGES, really? Yeesh.

I want some damn gay-sexin', dragon-riding pretty bois flying around saving the planet and getting draon-sex-pollened, hell yes!

Transcript: Having loved this miniseries, I avoided the movie for years. I'll admit, I was biased against it because I often dislike US adaptations. But I finally watched it in my most charitable mood... And I just can't believe how bad it is. Horribly awkward writing, full of unnecessary dramatics and antagonism. They managed to make every single character less intelligent and less interesting. And much higher budget cast, but somehow much worse acting. I'm really trying to believe that US adaptations (and movie adaptations of TV shows) don't have to be bad, but this awful high-budget, A-list cast, popularly-praised film isn't making it any easier.
