John Williams saved that movie.

I personally don't mind the build-up to Godzilla in this movie because it does work, my issue is that after the first reveal G barely turns up and the movie cuts away not just once, not twice, THREE times from monster fights to focus on the incredibly bland army characters and that I couldn't forgive. I still rank it lower than the '98 movie simply because that one is bad and dumb but at least it has the monster IN it. Also I find the characters entertaining if very tropey, but I'll take that over bland shlock.

They lost me when they killed Cranston's character off. They had Bryan freakin' Cranston and casually offed his character. That told me all I needed to know about Edwards' directorial competence.

And you can't even see what is going on when the monster fight does happen, it is so dark. Turn on the fucking the lights, for gods' sake.

And in Jaws, when the shark shows up it's a big deal! Stuff happens, even if we don't see the shark much! We don't randomly cut away to go see what some other people are doing while a shark fight happens somewhere else mostly in the dark.
