Comment OP here and yes, this. I'm in it to make costumes so I can dress as a character, not act like them. I can't act for shit.

And for cosplayers who are in it to, I guess, "become" the character, a lot of them maybe can't sew or make anything for shit.

And then there's the people who get on my nerves who just want to dress as a character. It's harmless and brings them joy and I'm being dumb.

I'm sure there are plenty of cosplayers who think I shouldn't cosplay because I'm not an astonishingly talented or skilled costumer, just stubborn, because I can't act, because I'm fat and middle aged, and on and on.

That's why I posted this as a secret comment and don't actually do the gatekeeping asshole thing irl. People who just like dressing up shouldn't stop just because I'm bitching on FS.

Idk, I do wish we could go back to separating costumers, people dressing up, and cosplayers (as people who both dress up as and act like the characters).

They were never totally distinct categories, but I feel like maybe more amateur costumers would go back to wearing their work at cons if it wasn't almost expected that if they aren't already fantastically skilled at costuming, they should just buy their outfits, from off the rack to $$$ custom, depending on their budget.

It's like people get intimidated by the pro work (which is amazing) and are scared off trying to learn because no one wears their middling journeyman efforts in public anymore.

That's one of the things that bugs me about the costume/cosplay conflation-- I've seen SO many wonderful people who LOVE a character and would love to do the costumes but are scared off because they feel like they don't have the right "look" (too short, too old, "not pretty enough" etc) and I find that SO frustrating because! You should be able to just! Do your thing! With joy! And not fret about whether you look like the character stepped out of the movie/show!

This is why I hate "professional cosplaying" in standees honestly.

It's usually just hot models wearing some ready made costume. They may or may not know the source material.
