I'm glad I made this secret, makes me realize I'm definitely not the only one. But just look at the number of people telling me to watch it! Don't worry guys, I would've seen it by now if it bothered me THAT much. I think I'll just keep on pretending. No need to lose an entire weekend for something I'm almost certain I won't like. :D

So who else hasn't seen Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter either? I admit that I tried to watch the first but gave up maybe 10mins into it. I need to form a club.

I never read the Harry Potter books and only saw bits of a couple of the movies. I read everything I needed to know on the internet, even participated in fandom a bit without anyone catching on. Wiki, imdb quotes, official websites are good enough to allow you to fake it, just pretend you saw it several years ago and can hardly remember it.

Not going to try and convince you to watch, rather am going to try and explain why the Star Wars movies ARE a big deal. I don't care if people don't like them, but the "MEH, WHO CARES" comments are kind of getting to me.

When they came out in the 70's, they were literally like movies from another planet. No one was doing ANYTHING like Star Wars at the time and so they were a huge deal. Ask anyone who was around when they came out. (Well, anyone who was a teen or younger adult.) They changed the world of film-making forever.

"They're so cliche!" "They're so predictable!" Yes, NOW they are, because today's movies have reiterated everything the Star Wars movies invented- a hundred times over. But when they came out, they were surprising- not like anything anyone had ever seen on screen before.

This is why I don't expect that people who did not grow up with them or parents who loved them to care for them if they watch them for the first time NOW. Because NOW they are not all that special. But they WERE, and for that fact they still are in the eyes of fans. Also, many people who don't give the films a second glance disregard all of the history and mythology and depth packed into the films... it's kind of sad. Star Wars is much more than movies and that's another reason it's so popular. George Lucas created a living, breathing world for his films to take place in and fans adore that world- hence the costumes, conventions, etc.

Watch them or don't, it doesn't really matter- just as long as you don't hate on the fans- "WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL"- blahblahblah you know (you haven't yet, I'm just saying, please don't. Many people do and it's upsetting)... the fans are awesome and very justified in their love of something that did and still does have a huge relevance in film and storytelling.

they are good movies and so are so many others that are so popular! it is kind of a peeve to me when people refuse to see stuf because they are sick of hearing about it bc it is "omg so popular" but honestly? it's their loss, they're missing out on something they could potentially enjoy
