I got forced to watch all these a couple of years ago (am now 22, got made to watch them when I was 20), because I got told (by a complete moron) that I couldn't call myself a fan of Scifi/fantasy if I had never seen these movies. I wish I never had bothered, they are beyond boring, very predictable, and way overhyped.

Just watch it and get it over with. It'll only take one weekend. Do homework or browse the net while doing it if you start to get bored.

And they seem predictable and cliche because so many people are influenced by them. I'm not a fan either, but it's sort of a cultural basis thing. :/

[identity profile] earthquakedream.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm 19 and I haven't watched the movies. I have a vague idea of what they're about, but...nothing that makes me want to watch them.

[identity profile] riprosencrantz.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never seen them either. My own girlfriend has told me about the same and friends have expressed just as much surprise and been very adamant that I watch these masterpieces to the name of science fiction. I'm close to telling them all to shut the hell up.

[identity profile] srsfnbsns.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're curious, WATCH IT! If not, who the fuck cares? Yeah, it's pop culture, but you can live without it.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-09 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, just watch them, or at least just try the original three films (4-6). I quite enjoy watching them (more as adventure films than as sci-fi)

[identity profile] zanzou-chan.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Watch them. Just to say that you have, because you very well might enjoy them, and it's an easy way to kill some time with your friends. If you tell one of your friends "Hey, I'm finally going to watch Star Wars, want to join in?" they'll probably say yes. :) And watching a movie with a friend is almost always fun.

I hadn't watched any of the Star Wars movies a few months ago and was in a similar situation. Then I had to write an English essay--no, seriously--specifically about Star Wars. So I watched the first two prequel movies and the first original movie. They were good, so I'm not gonna say you're not missing out, but it's all right to say you haven't seen the movies.

I still haven't seen even one Bond movie and before two months ago I had never seen Star Wars and I had never seen nor read Lord of the Rings. It's probably a little sad and probably a little un-American, but if that's how it is, then that's how it is. If you're not interested, don't watch it.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-09 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, so why not just watch them?

Or why not just watch the first one (of the original trilogy, not the new movies). Then if you don't like it, you can at least say you gave it a fair chance. If you like it, you can watch the rest and you'll have found something new that you enjoy. It seems like a win-win situation to me. What's the big deal?
ext_52635: (Default)

Since you don't want to watch them you can always get this kid to explain them to you...

[identity profile] mekkio.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] latexana.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
just watch already, you don´t need to like it or anything, but is such a huge part of pop culture that you are missing.

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It's no big deal, I'm always a little surprised when someone hasn't seen Star Wars, but there's a lot of pop culture I have never seen, have no interest in, and am further distinterested in just because everyone goes "omg you haaave to watch it! *FORCE*". Doctor Who is a good current example.

That said, I do agree with an above poster...grab a friend, a whole crapton of snacks and have some fun with it if you're getting tired of not knowing :)

[identity profile] poke-fu.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's blasphemous, but surprising since it's such a popular thing. Even people who don't like SciFi have probably seen Star Wars and more than likely like it.

That being said, if you're not interested, then don't watch. If you're curious, then watch, but it doesn't have to be a big deal.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-09 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It probably has to do with the fact that those movies are a part of my childhood, but you should watch them: Even if you don't like them, they're an important part of cinema history.

And to everyone saying they're predictable: That's probably because EVERY SINGLE PLOT TWIST HAS BEEN REPEATED ON THE INTERNET 150000 TIMES. That's like saying Aerith dying in FF7 is predictable.

I get the same reaction when people find out I haven't watched LOTR. I downloaded the trilogy earlier this week and I'm going to watch them over the next few days.
Seriously, just watch them. It doesn't take up that much of your life.
If you really can't stomach it then at least read the plot synopses on good old Wikipedia.

You're not the only one.

TBH, I'm not really into sci-fi, so it's not that weird, but I'm surprised my mother (who loves sci-fi) never got me to watch any of them as a kid.

[identity profile] kinosino.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I've watched each film exactly once (Phantom Menace possibly a little more than that since I had to see it bits-and-pieces style). It is pretty cool, yeah, but I'm not all hyped-up fandom woo about 'em.

Just go ahead and watch 'em - they're just movies, no big deal. Then you can be all "yep seen 'em" and people will mostly be like "yeah woo cool" and life will go on.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
If it bothers you, you can always rent them and watch them.

Although they aren't great timely works of art, from a sheer "influence on all that comes after" point of view, they had a tremendous impact. They are important if you are interested in history and how things interconnect.

I eventually went and watched Deliverance simply because I got tired of not knowing what all the references were about. It was worth the couple of hours even though it wasn't a movie I would have chosen to watch if there hadn't been all the cultural baggage with it.

Merchandise! Merchandise! Merchandise!

[identity profile] a-pious-cruelty.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what they're about, but I've never actually watched an entire Star Wars movie. But I <3 Spaceballs.

They're boring as hell and not worth the time. Read the wiki article and pretend you saw them when people ask, you'll be a lot better off.

[identity profile] rabbitucker.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I say watch them. Many people like them. Many people don't. But, they are worth watching if for no other reason than they are widely influential. They are part of the American culture at large and widely parodied. Also, they provide great literary fodder for discussion on Jungian archetypes, Grail quests, and modern myth.

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I know plenty of people who've never seen Star Wars, but I still get shocked whenever I'm told that by someone, 'cause I'm such a movie buff. I mean, I'm not one of those people who makes others watch movies they aren't interested in ever seeing, and it's not like I think less of people who haven't/don't want to see my favourites, but I'll still kind of gasp when it comes up in conversation, 'cause I grew up with this stuff and have whole movies memorized. Like when my girlfriend said she'd never seen Jaws. It was startling! XD

[identity profile] 09019.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I know at least 2 people who haven't seen Star Wars (and old/young too). I mean... sure it's your choice, obv. but I think it's a pretty important cultural/nerd thing. Like if you ain't a nerd, ain't a sci-fi nerd then yeah, sure. You prolly will get made fun of, but you can always stick up for yourself like "yeah I just never wanted to get sucked into that black hole of pop culture" but yknow, only if you wanna be pretentious.

Anyway same as above, if yr at all curious, why the fuck not?? then again if you're not, then... don't.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-10 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I made this secret, makes me realize I'm definitely not the only one. But just look at the number of people telling me to watch it! Don't worry guys, I would've seen it by now if it bothered me THAT much. I think I'll just keep on pretending. No need to lose an entire weekend for something I'm almost certain I won't like. :D

So who else hasn't seen Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter either? I admit that I tried to watch the first but gave up maybe 10mins into it. I need to form a club.
