I saw bits and pieces of 'em when I was a kid, and remember them being a lot of fun. They're really not "masterpieces" in any normal sense of the word; the dialogue is fairly cliche, they're quite predictable. Think of them as a stereotypical spaghetti western trilogy, only SET IN SPAAAAACE, because that's pretty much what they are.

That said, they're pretty neat and I find them charming. If you're curious, rent the first one sometime (the actual first one, not the first of the "new" trilogy) and give it a whirl, but don't go into it expecting Oscar material. If you enjoy the ride, you can check out the others. ;) Have fun!
