C) If canon queer characters aren't getting love from Fandom then that is an issue with the characters, not the Fandom

I definitely don't agree with this. If anything I would say it's mostly just not a problem or an issue at all, just a fact

I would say it is a problem if so many people in Fandom obviously WANT queer characters but they bypass the canon ones to go for others. There is an issue there in making the queer characters relatable. Often, I have found, it's because the writers tend to make the canon queer characters be all about their queerness, and not just have it be a part of their character. That makes them... well, activism, and not characters.

IDK that happens sometimes but I think a lot of it is also that what people want out of characters for fannish purposes is just very specific and doesn't always line up with what's going on in a canon or text.

Like, the fact that a character gets adopted by fandom doesn't really mean they're a *better* character than one who doesn't get adopted by fandom. Fandom is a very specific thing!

This. It makes sense in theory to assume that how much fandom activity you dedicate to each character is a direct reflection of how much you like each character, i.e. you make the most fanworks about your #1 fave, you make the second most fanworks about your second fave, and so on. But that's really far from how it works. Some characters I love the most have nothing left for me to contribute to in a fannish sense because canon covers them so completely and so well, and that's part of why I love them so much! And I've written fics about characters I don't even like, because an idea for a fic about them struck me.

I think some fans themselves don't really consider that they like the fannish potential of a character more than the character as they are in canon, and say "___ is my favorite character" because of that fannish potential. But then who's to say that's not a valid reason to have them be your favorite character?

Depends on how you define "better", I guess. When it comes to Fandom, I look for characters that I want to spend time with. I would prefer to spend my time with other queers, so if they're not queer in canon then I make them queer in my space. And nine times out of ten the canon queer characters bore the shit out of me.

YMMV, etc etc

Nah, let's be real here: a lot of the time, it just boils down to whether the character is conventionally attractive or not.

My canon has a canon queer character. He's incredibly well-written and well-developed and has a great character arc. He's also older and not conventionally attractive, so right there a lot of people aren't interested in shippy stuff with him just because of those two things. I guarantee you that if he'd been about ten years younger and was "hot," people would be all over him.

And that's okay!

See points A and B.

With how many people like silver foxes, I doubt it's that they're older.

And that's entirely okay. Nobody has the moral obligation to fap to someone they find unattractive just because they happen to be queer.

oh man, meanwhile my primary fandom has a canon gay character who's too young to be remotely interesting to me, so I've latched onto the older guy who's not conventionally attractive but reads as queer to me (the actor is definitely hotter than the character but he's still very much not hollywood handsome? he's just my Type-- I've never seen him in anything that's allowed him to be sexy but like... photos where he's not doing a character?)... I can't promise I'd get into your thing, but if I did I think I'd love that old man!
