Re: Secrets you don't want to make...
(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)What does "Italian by birth" mean? I've never seen it before. Are you the Italian American anon or another Italian anon? Pardon by ignorance, but yeah this is pretty confusing to me lol I usually say "born and raised in Italy". Because IDK we have Italian citizens by birth who are not really "Italian", in the sense of they were not raised in Italy and can't speak the language.
BTW I agree with you. being Italian myself I do understand Maneskin's English pretty well, but their pronunciation, albeit very good, is a little bit awkward sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)Born in Italy, raised in the USA, and I can communicate in El Triestin ( a maritime dialect that is close to Venetian ), Italian, American English, and some student level Parisian French. And some nouns in other languages, too.
Autocorrect hates my guts, and whenever I try to communicate in two or more languages in the same post, I give people mild culture shock.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)Nah, your autocorrect is fine, I think. Don't worry. :)
It's just it's kind of difficult to understand where people come from (like their actual cultural background and language knowledge) when they talk about being born in Italy or being Italian (or any other country, actually) on the internet. American people -it's usually American people, but not exclusively- sometimes confuses the hell out of us, because we don't care about the "origin" of a person, but where they lived most of their life or what heavily influenced their environment while growing up. It's a fuzzy concept, very arbitrary sometimes, but I hope you get where I'm coming from. I suck at explaining myself eh.
Maybe a simple way to communicate it would be simply say "I'm a Native Italian speaker". Like. Just your language proficiency should be enough IMHO. In your case you maybe could always simply say you're Italian.
"Italian by birth" is kind of confusing to me. Like, OK, you were born in Italy, but... are you Italian? Do you speak Italian? Speaking Italian is the most important thing, so you could probably just go with that next time.
DISCLAIMER: ALL THIS SAID BY SOMEONE WHO IS EASILY CONFUSED BECAUSE THEY HAVE MET A LOT OF PEOPLE CLAIMING TO BE ITALIAN WHILE THEY JUST HAD DISTANT RELATIVE FROM ITALY AND THEY COULD NOT SPEAK A WORD IN ITALIAN THEMSELVES. Not trying to be rude, I swear, but shit is confusing.
Bello che sai parlare triestino lol abbiamo un dialetto simile. Scusa, ma mi eccito sempre quando vedo nuovi potenziali italiani qua. hello hello

(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)North Americans who speak English will almost always refer to their ancestry within an hour if not sooner. This is the tradition here. It just refers to ancestry and little else. This is very true when Americans introduce themselves to strangers.
Some ignorant Americans believe that their ancestry is the only valid one on planet Earth. Try hard to avoid those loudmouths. They like to drain all the energy out of the room, just like vampires or zombies.
Re: Secrets you don't want to make...
(Anonymous) 2023-06-13 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)I think this is just a cultural difference between North America (even Canada? IDK I think mainly USA) and rest of the world. It's not necessary bad, it's just... strange.
I get it in theory, but I don't really get it when I'm approached like that or when I see discourse online when people say stuff like "AS AN ITALIAN..." and then the OP is totally 100% born an raised in USA with an Italian great grandfather. Like. WTF. LOL
This is why I initially asked that anon (you?) what they meant by "Italian by birth". When you interact in USA centric online spaces it gets very confusing pretty quickly.
YO thanks for listening to my rant aha
