(Anonymous) 2023-06-16 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)The first post on the image has it in all caps:
"DO NOT USE AI TO FINISH SOMEONE ELSES FIC"
As far as I can see, the image that OP is using for their schadenfreude is not fanfic authors complaining about fanfic being made of their fanfic. AO3 has a "works inspired by" section for a reason. They're complaining about their information being put into a corporation database. They're complaining that someone, instead of being inspired by the fic into finishing it with their own creativity, decided that a machine with no emotion or thought behind it could finish the fic just as well as a human. THAT is what authors are horrified about. Stop ignoring it.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-16 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)The CONTEXT of those comments were people finishing stories in AI. Do you always repeat the context when commenting? I sure don't, cause it's fucking stupid.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-16 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)That's pretty clear, anon. Not sure why you're so determined to believe this person is speaking exclusively about using AI to finish fic, when they literally make this very clear statement right out of the gates.
The third and fourth commenters appear to be speaking fairly specifically about using AI, but the rest are pretty clearly objecting to people creating their own continuations, period.
If you want to read into it that they're all definitely just talking about using AI, even though most of the comments don't actually support that reading, that's on you.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-16 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)"DO NOT USE AI TO FINISH SOMEONE ELSES FIC"
"The way AI works is that it needs something put in as data first. when the authors didn't agree for their work to be used as data, it's theft and disrespectful"
"it's theft. the fanfic still belongs to the writer, who made it. the reader should not finish it with AI or claim to finish it without permission"
Also, see the post above, as this is not a new thing even from before "AI":
"Just contact the author. Ask for a summary of the ending. ask if you can write an AU of said ending. This is the community aspect trad authors don't get to have b/c fans have shat the bed and trad publishers don't want to deal with the lawyers. If the author doesn't respond, cite, say it's inspired by, link the story and ONLY post what you have written. If the author contacts you and wants you to take it down, do so! Welcome to the social side of fandom! Play nicely and be polite!"
It has always been rude and unethical to just... finish a fic that isn't yours. You have always been expected to contact the author first. Now that we have "AI", we have people who seem to think they can just steal the work and give it to a corporation to finish for them and cut out the author entirely. Either way, if the author has not made it clear on their post/blog/bio, you HAVE to make an attempt to contact them and then RESPECT their wishes. This is what being part of a community is. And fandom IS a community, not a content generator.
Likening other fanfic authors writing the ending to another fanfic author's work to writing fanfic of an IP is massively disingenuous. Fanfic authors are on the same ethical and legal level to each other.
An IP has a very large legal power gap over fanfic writers. In order to make the analogy work, you would have to compare JK Rowling getting fed up with JRR Martin taking too long and writing the end of ASOIAF for him. THAT is the analogy.
Everyone would be upset about that.
