If you don’t want someone dead enough that you would kill them yourself, don’t tell them to commit suicide. If you do want someone dead enough that you’d kill them yourself, they’re probably too powerful to care what a peon tells them, so just talking about it is pointless.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-19 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded. It's such a pathetic thing to say they should be embarrassed (and also realize they shouldn't try triggering people into suicide)

(Anonymous) 2023-06-19 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess if us oldfen ever said DIAF to someone, we don't have that much of a leg to stand on, but I still don't like KYS at all.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-19 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno. "Die in a fire" seems less harsh because of the exaggeration and because it doesn't necessarily denote suicide. Killing yourself is... altogether too close to home for a lot of people.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-19 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
To me, it's the implication of KYS - that you should realise you have so little worth that you should take your own life. It absolves the speaker of the responsibility, the onus is on the one being spoken to.

Whereas DIAF is more circumstance. It's "I wish you an unpleasant death" rather than "realise how worthless you are and make the world a better place by removing yourself from it". One is more personal than the other to me, which is why I'd be fine with DIAF but not KYS. (I've never said either, for the record).

NAYRT - Huh, yeah, this is well articulated, and ITA. (Though like you, I also never told anyone to DIAF, back when that was a thing people said. I think I only ever used to be hyperbolic about something that was annoying me, like, "Gah, this essay I have to write/the ants in my kitchen/liver meat/the garbage truck that makes noise outside my house every single morning needs to DIAF."

Ia, to my mind there's really no difference between them

(Anonymous) 2023-06-19 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
as another oldfen, my friends and I only ever used DIAF as a joke amongst ourselves. but i agree, somehow KYS seems harsher to me

I'm sorry but this is the first time I see DIAF haha. maybe I'm not as old as I thought (mid 30s here, from Europe). anyway, never yoused DIAF or KYS in my whole internet life.

Younger fan here. The main thing that rubs me the wrong way is that it can become quickly very hard to tell whether someone is saying KYS jokingly or if they genuinely want you to kill yourself. It's not something like "I hope you get eaten by sharks" or something exaggerated and kind of silly like that. It's something that someone could do at any time if they happen to get pushed too far.

I... have never seen this. What fandoms is this prevalent in?

I got told to kill myself a lot when I played League of Legends. It’s also a popular stereotype that Tumblr blogs that use a lot of pastel colors and talk about “positivity” will tell you to kill yourself.

Teens, antis, gamers, kpop fans and animated fandoms all spring to mind

you are so lucky, I envy your circles.
I mostly see it in gaming, anime and cartoons fandoms, almost always used by teens or under 25y/o users.

I think a basic requirement of a joke is that it be funny, which "kys" pretty much never is, and the more it's mindlessly repeated the unfunnier it gets. (I can think of a few in-universe contexts where it could be. Never from some anime-icon rando on Twitter though)

(Anonymous) 2023-06-20 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
It's considered funny when it's put in the mouth of an adorable lovable character or beside an emoji like this 🥰 because it's edgy and ironic and that's peak humor for 12-year-olds.

As someone who struggled with this in the past I don't like it either .

However the truth is people who say this and defend it's usage , well you have to treat them like sharks who crave the smell of blood (vulnerability) or trolls. . If they see you get upset it makes them happy and they push more.

So act unflappable. Respond with a joke . Brush it off etc. My favorite is "kill me yourself coward, if you can find me.".

Younger(ish) fan, and I hate this trend. Memes can be funny but random people on the internet are not your friends and you shouldn't be throwing it at them. Hell, I hate that it's so normalized to throw it outside of "memeing" too, it feels like internet fandom culture has become very apathetic in social media.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-21 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
This. Although you can also use it as a way to filter out people who don't care whether they're being hurtful. IME.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-20 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and I really hate how common it is on otherwise socially conscious blogs. Like, you have to be up-to-the-minute on LGBTQA+ and anti-racist terminology or you're harming people but saying "kys" is just fine? How does that make sense?

I'd see it very often used among young-ish minotrities blogs, and apparently for them making character's skin 0.05% lighter in a fanart is a crime, but casually using KYS is absolutely okay

I started playing video games with a girl in my fandom and she would randomly yell that out that she was gonna KHS over something in the game so I said, you know, "Well, I really hope you don't" and now she tries to catch herself when she kneejerk says it. I wish she wouldn't say it at all, but I guess small steps? I don't think there's much you can do unless you're actively friends with the people unfortunately.

IKR? My mother started playing an open world video game while convalescing after a serious foot injury, and now she's mutuals with several teenagers trying to survive high school. It's been funny to see the effect she has on their speech patterns? Because their general level of level of comfort with casually talking about suicidal ideation is completely foreign to her. And at the same time, they seem to really appreciate being friends with someone who treats them like they're worth taking seriously and their feelings matter.

I have a good mom. I'm sure a lot of other people are benefiting from being able to talk to her. But sometimes I also just find it really cute how they meet each other partway across generation gaps.
