In the context of the myths, Zeus isn't evil either, for fuck's sake.

I don’t think keeping the same personalities requires keeping the same judgement. Sure, Zeus isn’t evil if you take the position that he has the right to do whatever his power allows him to do. But if you realistically portray the consequences of the things he does in myths, then a modern viewpoint can’t frame that as anything but evil. Marie goes to great lengths to explore how much damage Zeus does to the entire pantheon.

And if you realistically portray the morals of the society and religion that created the myths in the first place, especially when it comes to things like hubris and what they considered basic respect towards guests, enemies, neighbors, what-have-you, then Zeus is no more evil than any other Olympian. The "modern viewpoint" is just that, a modern viewpoint. It's like the Greek equivalent of "did you know Old Testament God was mean?"

Marie’s central insight is that gods can have hubris, and the Fates can punish it the same way they punish mortals. For that matter, it looks like the series is moving in the direction that the Fates have hubris.
