So is blorbo supposed to be sarcastic or self mocking or is it supposed to be 100% genuine? Because I've seen arguments both ways.

Honestly either way I hate it. I haven't seen a fandom term/concept that I automatically hate so much in many years, so congrats on that fandom!

people might affectionately use it in earnest, but the word is stupid sounding because it does originate with a joke post

My impression so far is that this word is popular with people who are afraid of acting like their preferences deserve any respect from anyone. It's a way of saying "I like" that sounds so stupid it's easy to backtrack from if the response is bad. Which is also why you ask "do people actually mean this?" and crickets chirp.

I'm not a fan of it either, to say the least.

For me it's somewhere in the middle, but that's partly because if I love a character that much I am going to relentlessly mock that character for their flaws, so I'm partly mocking myself for being obsessed but also mocking my blorbo. But I wouldn't do that if I didn't adore them.
