So is blorbo supposed to be sarcastic or self mocking or is it supposed to be 100% genuine? Because I've seen arguments both ways.

Honestly either way I hate it. I haven't seen a fandom term/concept that I automatically hate so much in many years, so congrats on that fandom!

people might affectionately use it in earnest, but the word is stupid sounding because it does originate with a joke post

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
My impression so far is that this word is popular with people who are afraid of acting like their preferences deserve any respect from anyone. It's a way of saying "I like" that sounds so stupid it's easy to backtrack from if the response is bad. Which is also why you ask "do people actually mean this?" and crickets chirp.

I'm not a fan of it either, to say the least.

For me it's somewhere in the middle, but that's partly because if I love a character that much I am going to relentlessly mock that character for their flaws, so I'm partly mocking myself for being obsessed but also mocking my blorbo. But I wouldn't do that if I didn't adore them.

It's a ridiculous word, but I do like the concept. When 'my favorite character' doesn't cover the load. I also enjoyed finding out I wasn't the only one who felt that way about certain characters, which is always nice.

I don't know if 'comfort character' is supposed to mean the same thing? I never though it did. But that term also weirds me out a bit, so I get the feeling.

I liked blorbo as a joke, but it's only fun for so long.

Blorbo means a character you will obsess over no matter what.

A comfort character is a character whose presence in your life grants you comfort or respite during hard times.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck I thought it meant Drabble. Whoops I’m old.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I still don't quite grasp what a 'comfort character'... like, is?

A blorbo I get. They're a character you like a lot. You rotate them in your mind and you smash them against other characters.

The heck's a comfort character for, though? People have lists of 'em like they're kintypes. (Kin drama might be silly but I at least comprehend what they're so mad about.)

I like the word blorbo. It's friend-shaped.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
+1

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, I agree. I do really appreciate the usefulness of the word blorbo, but it sounds so silly, even next to all the other fandom words that aren't exactly known for sounding dignified and cool.

And yeah, I too find "comfort character" infantilizing and twee. Although I don't mind "emotional support character" at all, I guess because it's implicitly tongue-in-cheek, with a touch of bleak, self-mocking humor.

I initially hated the term blorbo but now I use it and like it. It's ridiculous, which is how I should feel when I stan my stupid war criminals (I'm kidding, of course, but it does remind me to not take things so seriously).

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
This.

It's good to be *sincere* about fandom things, but taking things seriously can make things rocky.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
The reason I dislike "comfort character" is that I always see it in the context of someone complaining that another fan wrote/drew/posted something they don't like about that character. Fuck off, different people like different things. So I associate it with whiny anti-style complaints.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, same. Which fits right in with it being infantilizing. They treat themselves like young helpless babies who can't curate their blocklists and fanfic searches and who need their comfort characters, like literal babies need their comfort blankets and comfort dolls to stop them crying.

Funny that I made a secret about hating the words "comfort character" for being infantilizing, and almost all the replies were aggressive "let people enjoy things" posts. Yet now a lot of replies on this secret are saying exactly what my secret said.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. But it sounds less like the words are poorly chosen (though I think they are) than that the behavior they're associated with is deeply repellent.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
I hate this word, it's so...slurpy and disgusting

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Even more than that, it's annoying and disorienting how quickly they pick up and drop new slang. I wish they would stick to *one* word for anything for longer than a year.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really have an icky association with the word. To me, it's always sounded like "This is what your random fantasy/anime/video game/sci-fi/etc. character sounds like to me when you tag them on my posts when I have no idea who that is." For example, many Lord of the Rings character names have a "Blorbo"ish feel to them.

That word always reminds me of Mr Blobby of 1990s British TV fame (or infamy): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4Z29diq6Sk
