...Yeah, I was with you up until the end.

I try to make my "part of a series but largely self-contained" fics as accessible as possible by saying in an opening note something like "You don't *need* to have read X, Y, and Z before you read this, but some of the jokes/references/etc. will make more sense if you do." If the reader is someone I know well enough that they ask me, I am happy to explain it! But honestly I'm just happy if anyone is reading it at all, regardless of the viewpoint they're reading it from.
