You could just... not post.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 03:16 am (UTC)(link)No, I did not miss that part. I just think that if a writer is complaining that readers have 'fucked up' by not getting private jokes, odd turns of phrase, etc. then that writer is kind of a dick about it and maybe shouldn't post publicly until they get their self-importance in check. Now, if that writer has posted warnings in their notes about what they have in their fics and they ask readers not to comment wanting explanations and the readers still do, those readers have fucked up, not by their confusion, but by commenting and not paying attention to the warnings.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 08:21 am (UTC)(link)I don't know that they aren't a dick to people who ask for help if they get confused. And also, because they're putting it on fandomsecrets, some people are going to wonder if they're being judged by writers in general for not getting everything, and worry about admitting that when they comment.
Which, aside from sucking for readers, is a crappy result for other writers. Because most of us ARE trying to be understood and we actually learn things from knowing what things we can hint at, versus what things will just be puzzling.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 02:51 am (UTC)(link)I wouldn't go so far as to "don't read it then", but if someone did ask to explain, I would likely refer them to the fic that it's mentioned in.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 05:18 am (UTC)(link)Oh I have a rant I should make a secret. Someone who is CONSTANTLY writing about how they pirate content bitching about AI insisting she knows some of her WIP have been stolen? First, you write fanfic! Based on other people’s property! And you steal shut all the time!
Oh man. Sorry to thread jack needed that off my chest.
I write for an audience of one. I think I’m hilarious and sexy. I don’t mind if no one else agrees but it’s kind sweet if they do.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-23 07:35 am (UTC)(link)- write primarily for yourself, but
- enjoy other people getting what your write, but
--> get actively angry if you have to explain what you write to someone
May I kindly suggest that explaining some of what you write (I'm talking the the in-jokes or references) might increase your audience of like-minded individuals with actually little effort from you.

I try to make my "part of a series but largely self-contained" fics as accessible as possible by saying in an opening note something like "You don't *need* to have read X, Y, and Z before you read this, but some of the jokes/references/etc. will make more sense if you do." If the reader is someone I know well enough that they ask me, I am happy to explain it! But honestly I'm just happy if anyone is reading it at all, regardless of the viewpoint they're reading it from.
