No idea what that phrase is. But given that Glorfindel isn't around in the second age, only the first age and then the third, no he shouldn't show up on the show.

Yeah, I've generally seen 'absolute unit' describing large things too.

I dunno, maybe they're admiring Glorfindel's combat prowess?

(Anonymous) 2023-06-24 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, because the show has cared so much about accuracy and faithfulness to lore so far.
They also would cast an ugly short haired guy for him.

In Australia it means someone/-thing that's really big, like overall big-ness. Eg: "Look at this absolute unit of a spider". I wasn't aware of it being internet slang, maybe it's morphed?

(Anonymous) 2023-06-24 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Probably. I see it regularly used to describe someone big

(Anonymous) 2023-06-24 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
You're not wrong; that is in fact what absolute unit means. Someone very large (muscles/fat/tall/whatever) and usually includes the implication of attractiveness or being unstoppable.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-24 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, you're right, people are just all twee and ~quirky~ about ironically misusing the term for just about everything.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-24 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
You could Google it.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-24 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
It refers to bigness, but it can be used metaphorically

Bears

Are so good

I strongly agree.

Urban dictionary says:

1. A person or object, who is large in the sense nothing can get in their way.
2. Someone or something that has the shear mass or presence that makes your jaw drop and/or give the utmost respect to.
3. Someone THICC and BIGG.
4. Someone who would be considered muscular or horribly overweight and has a unnormally large body type.
5. Bro this is someone who is just such an unreal, godlike kid at everything he does. ABSURD AF.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-24 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
As a wrestling fan, I usually take it to mean someone really muscular and/or tall

(Anonymous) 2023-06-24 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It did mean that, but then semantic drift happened. The same way "gross" went from "big" to "disgusting", "absolute unit" is shifting from "big" to "great" in some Internet circles.

"Big" itself has undergone a similar shift (I'm big on X - I'm a big fan of X), words in that corner of the semantic space just like drifting.
