It did mean that, but then semantic drift happened. The same way "gross" went from "big" to "disgusting", "absolute unit" is shifting from "big" to "great" in some Internet circles.

"Big" itself has undergone a similar shift (I'm big on X - I'm a big fan of X), words in that corner of the semantic space just like drifting.
