Glad you found enjoyment in them!
But personally, I've never understood why this got so popular. I've always found it boring and unimaginative.

same. I remember 10+ years ago people quoting it at me at conventions or other geek gatherings and my response was always "....that's dumb?" It was dumb. Just so fucking dumb and I am not shocked to be sitting here thinking back of the acquaintences who were into it and how I definitely don't talk to most of them nor share any fandom interests with them in the end.

I recall being like a sophomore or junior in high school and reading them, thinking they were funny when a LOTR fansite shared links to the Fellowship's Secret Diaries.

Jumpcut to me in my mid-20s, feeling grateful that as big of a HP fan as I was I didn't get involved in the fandom because apparently there's a BNF who's an actual published author now and she had a very shitty rep as a HP BNF...and apparently she's the author of those LOTR Bridget Jones' Diary parody fics.

What a small world lol

As someone with no personal attachment to Cassandra Clair nor was I ever in any fandoms she was in/my fandom spaces were never affected by her...it's been super interesting to see the whole discourse around her and her career (as both a BNF in a huge fandom and a fanfic writer who became a successful published author).

I respect that she has the talent and drive to garner a dedicated fan following and a rather successful career, but holy shit, it's...wild the sort of reputation she has regarding those who hate on her or criticize her. Because it's not like she doesn't deserve some of the negativity directed towards her.

Like, I think back to fandom dramas I actually witnessed/lived through and to have your fandom BNF life be well known/attached to your very public career...damn, I really don't know if I could ever live life easily/comfortably/with enthusiasm.

I (old) was sent them as an email fwd, before I really even knew what fanfiction was. I thought they were HILARIOUS and promptly fwd>fwd>RE>fwd>FUNNY'd them to all my friends.
I actually reread a couple earlier this year after remembering about them, and someone smarter than me can probably put a little essay together about how steeped they are in the early 2000s culture of casual but constant homophobia, without really being that themselves.

AYRT

Huh. I think I re-read them in my 20s but I honestly don't have the strongest memory of them.

I don't want to re-read them but I'm intrigued by what you got out of re-reading it. LOL

Like, based off what I can remember as dick jokes via The Carrot with Merry (and The Hobbits in general I think?), I would be interested if anyone ever wrote an essay/made a video essay on said topic.

pretty sure these were The First Fanfic I ever read, back in high school when the LOTR films were coming out. Boggles my mind when I have students now who read her new "original" stuff.

She's an ok human being. Idk why OP hates on her. I think it could be jealousy or fat phobia. One of the two.

Anyway, I also liked those. Legolass: my hair brush broke. Boromir: I'm still not a king. There was something about carrots and hobbit I think. I don't remember the ships tho besides Frodo/Sam.

Not OP

Do you know her personally? Lotta weird jumps to conclusions with that first paragraph nonny

ayrt
She might be not the most likable but that's it.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-29 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
She would literally send her followers to attack people if they had the mildest crit of her work, 'not the most likeable' is a pretty big understatement, she's a huge bully.

My dude she is a con artist and a theif. Definitely look into the fandom history there. Obviously some of it will be over dramatic, bit Cassie Claire earned her hate fans the honest way.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-29 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
They also forget when she sent her fans after someone begging for help to buy her mom's cancer meds. She was an asshole.

This is the most ignorant and asinine thing I’ve read in a while.
