Or they think racism is bad.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
Or they want people to see that they thinking racism is bad, without having to analyze, consider, or change their own behaviour in any meaningful way.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe you're a paranoid little shithead who needs to believe everyone is as bad as you?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
No need to be hostile and rude just because you disagree with their point.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
No-one is calling it 'bad', only 'performative'.

Which it absolutely is.

Changing the title of one's fic serves no purpose other than getting attention to the fic author, so regardless of whether they actually oppose racism or not, there is no other point to doing so except to make sure that the author is seen to oppose racism.

Changing the title of one's fic serves no purpose other than getting attention to the fic author

Except the actual, original purpose spelled out by the campaign itself? to get more AO3 users to notice this issue (because it's literally in a fic title) and to show that it's not just a tiny handful of people who care.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

As you can see from the thread, all it's done is made people skip over that fic, possibly that author, and made us all aware that people who subscribe to this are antis and bullies... So... mission accomplished?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Idk if you realize but most disruptive activism is going to just be clocked as annoyance by most people, because they care more about their personal routines being disrupted than about whatever cause the activists care about (think about blocking a highway at rush hour). The real measure isn’t how many people skipped over the fics & were annoyed at anyone who participated, the real measure is did it further the cause of the activism?

In this case it did. OTW was silent for literal years, then this campaign happened, got enough ppl to care, & suddenly OTW did the thing the campaign wanted them to do

So yeah, mission absolutely accomplished actually

DA

think about blocking a highway at rush hour

I personally don’t think that’s a great example of a good protest, if that’s what you’re implying it is. It’s not a harmless thing to do, because while some people will just have their routine shaken up a bit, others might have had something really important they were on their way to. And you can’t always take another route depending on where the highway is blocked off, and you can’t really turn back most of the time.

I’m not disagreeing with any of your other points though.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don’t think it’s a “good” protest, it’s just a similar principle of doing something mildly disruptive (as opposed to not disruptive at all, or majorly disruptive). Irl mildly disruptive can still have real consequences beyond annoyance, online mildly disruptive is literally what this campaign did, making the normal browsing experience a little less smooth & pleasant. That was my point.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
It's more than just mildly disruptive to the people they've been bullying and harassing and calling "pokemon of color."

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Except not. Cause this shit didn't start going on fic titles until AFTER AO3 brought in the anti-harassment changes.

They got what they (said they) wanted. You can't be actively racist against someone who won't let you. Racist and harassing a fan of color? BOOM, you're blocked! Leave racists comments on a fic? BOOM deleted and blocked!

So why did people suddenly start putting this on their fic titles NOW? Because protecting fans of color wasn't what they wanted at all. They're antis. And they don't stop until they get to ban everything they think is gross.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Lol they wanted OTW to update about hiring a consultant which they promised to do in 2020, that’s literally it. OTW could have said “actually we made these changes, so no need” & that also would have been an update

But I guess OTW board actually disagrees with you that the changes they made are sufficient because they still wanna hire a consultant

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
From the OTW site:

Internally, back in 2021 the OTW opened recruitment for a Diversity Consultant Research Officer (DCRO). They began their work in 2022, contacting internal stakeholders and researching firms. The DCRO hopes to finish their internal studies by September, and has already begun to investigate potential contractors.

So... they're still working on it. They've been working on it for two years. They've said they're still working on it. What's the campaign for again?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
The campaign was specifically to get the update you’re quoting, which only happened thanks to the campaign. Now it’s about continuing to hold OTW accountable so they continue to update regularly (thing it’s not actually a campaign anymore, that’s ended). It’s… really not that deep or that complicated

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
This. 100% this.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

And if you're not actually doing anything but putting that in front of your fics.... you're virtue signalling. Like... I can't be any clearer about this. ???

It's not like virtue signaling is a horrible thing. It doesn't make you a bad person. It doesn't hurt anyone. But the reason it's got such a bad reputation is that it also doesn't HELP anyone(else). It's a bit masturbatory.

And like I said, it's the best scenario in this instance.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Orrrrrrrrrrrrrrr you're actually doing what the campaign asked, which is raising awareness of this issue (because it's literally in a fic title now so it's visible to more users) and showing others in the community that they're not alone in caring about racism on AO3, which is what's needed to hold the org accountable.

literally i've seen all this stuff spelled out by EOTWR themselves on twitter/tumblr why is it so hard for people to get

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Except it's not raising awareness of the issue because it doesn't discuss the issue. At most, people will see that and think, "oh, they're against racism, good" and move on. Which is literally virtue signaling.

People who actually want to know more will find the EOTWR and realize they're full of shit and now will have a negative opinion of everyone who got duped into putting that on their fic without knowing what it actually was. Like I said, virtue signaling is the best case scenario in this situation.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Lol sure, that’s why the goals of the campaign were successfully met, because their methods were totally ineffective & everyone just thought they were full of shit

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
If the goals of the campaign were successfully met, why are they calling for more action? Exactly what action are they calling for? Oh yeah, censorship...

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Lol do you know how activism works? Why do democrats continue to hold events after a successful national election? Why do ppl who care about the environment continue to care even after a specific successful campaign?

The campaign is over, doesn’t mean everyone shut their brains off immediately. Most ppl moved on, some continue to talk and act in various ways to continue to hold OTW accountable

Anyway they’re def the censorship police for literally asking OTW to update about a promise the org itself made

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Why do democrats continue to hold events after a successful national election? Why do ppl who care about the environment continue to care even after a specific successful campaign?

LOLOLOLOL what world do you live in that you think ANY of that has been successful? Have you gone outside at any point in time in the last ten years???

act in various ways to continue to hold OTW accountable

And they've done that. OTW actually thanked them for keeping that in the spotlight. Mission accomplished. So what are they campaigning for again?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Do you think successful activism irl has just never happened in the last 10 years?????

I guess that does explain it. Sorry I don’t have that kind of time lol

Activism isn’t a zero sum game, you do campaigns that rally attention & resources, you accomplish small goals, that’s what success is</> and it doesn’t mean you just forget about it & move on afterwards (like in the examples I gave).

Anyway recommend you actually look at irl activism & then compare it to EOTWR & then things will stop seeming like a conspiracy theory. It’s just… normal activism
