Elizabethan Blackadder really tests my belief that I am not at all attracted to Rowan so I get you...

Speaking of, they recently showed the lost pilot episode on TV here and even though there were many problems with it (including that most of the cast just didn't seem right) I don't get how they decided to change Blackadder into a bumbling idiot for the first series when they had the performance more along the lines of Blackadder II and beyond in that pilot episode. It's such a bizarre choice, though hindsight is a wonderful thing I guess.

Rowan Atkinson was known as the comedian who pulled funny faces, at the time. That was it, he was Mister Rubberface, so they wrote to that aspect of his performances. It was a mistake to be so limiting, but they were all so much younger and inexperienced then.

That's a very good point. I also think that from Blackadder II onward being limited to (roughly) literally three rooms really helped. I know that was part budget constraints but it definitely added a charm to the series that the first one lacked.
