I mean, if they're charging at a rate appropriate to their skill level, why not? To coin the old adage, you get what you pay for, and some people might prefer to pay less. And for those willing to pay more, I'm sure there'll be more talented and more expensive artists to choose from.

I'd wonder the same thing, OP. Don't booths/tables at cons cost money to rent? I hope they're at least breaking even. This might be ungenerous of me, because I have zero artistic skills and while I say power to the people who are brave enough to do this... yeah, I'm not paying $10 for teen-level drawing.

So many fanartists are mediocre to bad and get all sorts of praise and people buying their stuff. I don't understand it. Like are they all just friends being kind and supporting people or do people just have way lower standards of "good" than I do? It shall forever be a mystery.

Art can be very subjective. Some very famous artists' works look amateurish or just off-putting to me.

The artists who annoy me are the ones who make huge dramatic posts about how NOBODY supports ARTISTS and why won't people commission them and likes are useless! Some of them are good artists, some of them are not.

Someone who is not that skilled just going about their business drawing what somebody wants to see, even if that someone is not me? Totally fine.

If I give you the benefit of the doubt that your idea of bad fanart is not just heavily stylized in a way you don't vibe with--then yeah, I know what you mean and I'd probably feel the same way if I saw a booth full of that stuff at a con.

But otoh, I love lots of fanart that is heavily stylized doodles. As long as the style is deliberate and consistent, and succeeds in conveying whatever it's trying to convey, then I'm going to respect the skill there--even if the artist's style looks like art a dog threw up.

A lot of them probably aren't making money; most "artist alley" tables don't make a profit. Sometimes that's fine, they're doing it for the fun and the status. Sometimes they don't even realize it, because mediocre-to-good art skill don't automatically convey even the most basic of accounting skill (The number of artists I've had to explain concepts like "gross", "net", and "cost of inventory" to...) and if they make enough gross to pay for their meals at the con they honestly think they're breaking even (sometimes this is even true, some artist's alley tables are barely more expensive than a regular badge, and if you were planning to attend the con anyway...) And some of them live on a supply of ever-bolstered hope that this is the con that will finally put them in the black.

Anyway, if you want an actual answer to your question, ask them if they need any help with sorting their receipts and accounts.

I've wondered the same thing, anon. Fortunately not about friends, but definitely about art quality from people who hope to sell their art.

They may be more self-aware than you think. As someone who wants to start getting coms and selling my art, I'm aware I'm not at a level many bigger artists are, just a little out of alternatives at the moment. The positive of doing booths can be reaching a wider audience which can pay off later, it's not only what you make at the booth.

Also, even really great artists don't make too much from booths from what I've heard, you need to be top of the tops for it to give a lot back. Then the positive of having less experienced artists is that they'll not be as expensive, and they also may not have certain limits many bigger artists have, like just certain ships or any ships at all.
