honestly, if they do rarepairs or rare characters, it probably works for them.

This is what gets me.

A lot of the art I have isn't the best, but I'm happy to have it because it is of characters no one was drawing ♡ I've commissioned a lot of fanart for nicer things, but that's digital compared to having something I can squeeze in my grubby goblin hands.

See, I don't even get that, because I can commission a good artist for whatever I went and get good-quality art of my rarepair.

But a good artists is generally going to be a lot higher in price to commission than a cheap print.

Maybe I'm weird, but if I'm going to spend money on something, I'd much rather save up and spend more to get something good then blow money on cheap crap.

You can yeah, but sometimes you want an artist who actually likes or is familiar with your character if you're going to pay for it. sometimes less technically good but understands the fandom around the character is better than technically good but ignorant or hateful

Most good artists I've found never have commissions open. They have more steady avenues of income, like patreon or freelance jobs, so they don't bother with commissions.

There are good artists who take commissions because they have disability/mental health reasons that make it hard for them to hold down a steady job or freelance reliably... but for those same reasons they're always super backlogged and rarely have commissions open.

From my experience, most of them do the big mainstream ships because they probably think it will sell more. Or completely original stuff, which is much more of a gamble (random cutesy anime girl with tits out always tells, though, I guess).
