What are you reading?

Fic, book, etc?

Or what was the last good thing you read?

I'm on a scifi kick lately and this came as a solid next for people who enjoyed the Murderbot books. I'm only a little bit into it but so far it's kept my interest!

I've started a LOTR reread. Reading my dad's copy. Making me feel close to him.

Also working on the Dune Encyclopedia. I have that in my car so if I need reading when I'm out I pick that up.

Next new read will be Tess Emerald Sea when I'm mentally up for new things.

I've been reading Small, But Fierce very slowly. I've been craving Hobbit fic recently. https://archiveofourown.org/works/18271727/chapters/43240049

I'm in between books. Just finished Final Girls Support Group. Now I am waiting for Out by Natsuo Kirino.

A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers

[personal profile] randomdrops 2023-07-02 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It's slow going. It's one of those books that switches between two stories every other chapter and I find myself fully engaged in one plot line while not caring much about the other. It's not awful, just slow. Which I knew going in because that's kind of Becky Chambers' style. I haven't give up on it yet, but like I said it's slow going.

Just finished reading Devotion by Hannah Kent. I bought a gorgeous hardback copy with the sea motif wrapped around the page edges so 10/10 for presentation but the story kinda stalls in the middle with a major event. Beautiful prose though.

I'm now reading A Girl Made of Air by Nydia Hetherington. Kinda hesitated because of comparisons to the Night Circus (which again was beautiful writing but NOTHING AT ALL happened and it angered me) but I'm giving it a go!

I'm trying to read The Body Keeps the Score, but it's really hard to both appreciate the valid points of the book while realizing that the subjects studied are all likely neurotypical and that trauma likely looks different in the neurodiverse. I've brought this up with my counselor (who has experience with autistic patients), and he thankfully thinks my frustration with this is completely valid. (He also has hinted that the studies being done on trauma and neurodiversity at the moment are not the highest quality.)

Last movie

What's the last movie you enjoyed either at home or in the theater?

In theater: Indy 5. really enjoyed. Before that it was Honor Among Thieves, which I really loved.

At Home: rewatched Galaxy Quest. Will always love that movie.

Last movie in the theater was Dungeons and Dragons, which was a damn delight. So much fun!

Last movie at home was Tetris. It was a little long and slow in places but fun all the same.

Watched The Super Mario Bros Movie with my family last night. Everyone enjoyed it. The adults got to look for all the easter eggs and the kids loved the slapstick (my niece loved every time he turned into an animal).

Yesterday, was streaming Disney movies I hadn't seen. Saw The Emperor's New Groove and Sneakerella. Everyone kept going on about the former, and as for the latter, I don't have any standards when it comes to Cinderella movies. Regardless, I enjoyed both.

In theatre: Detective Pikachu, which is also the last movie I saw in theatre. Not a big cinema person, lol.

At home: Encanto or The Suicide Squad (whichever came out later), which was also the last movie I watched in general.

I'm just not a movie person in general, I guess. I can go years without watching a movie.

Across the Spiderverse was the last movie I saw in theaters, but it was also the second time I had seen it. The last movie I saw for the first time was the live-action Little Mermaid.

I absolutely love Across the Spiderverse, hence seeing it twice! And I would have liked to see it a third time there, but I’ll probably wait until it’s streaming for that. It was even better than the first imo, which is saying a lot considering how much I love the first! I can’t wait for the third!(even though I know it’s been delayed, but what can you do :/)

I liked The Little Mermaid, it was very cute. But I don’t see myself rewatching it anytime soon. It didn’t feel as unnecessarily padded as other live-action Disney remakes, but it was a bit too long for me. I still enjoyed it, and I especially loved Halle’s voice and the costume design for Ariel and the queen! Mellisa McCarthy was a fun Ursala, but still not a replacement for the original(although that could go for everyone tbh). But I didn’t like the change of making her Ariel’s aunt. I don’t feel like it added any significant. And while I like Awkwafina, her performance as Scuttle was hit and miss, and I didn’t love her song ‘The Scuttlebut’. The other original songs were fine enough.

As an aside, I love Honor Among Thieves so much as well! I’m not a D&D fan(or a fan of most tabletop RPGs or TCGs). But I knew enough from pop-culture and being on the internet in geeky certain circles for long enough to know most kinds of monsters(like mimics), the different wizard factions, and a lot of the terminology. Although I also knew some stuff from being a big fan of the Fate series, which has the character alignments and stats being directly inspired by D&D. So I got way more of the in-jokes than I expected to. Plus, it was just a great and fun movie, and even people I went with who knew less about D&D loved it! The characters were great, and wonderfully acted! The worldbuilding was cool, and made the world feel authentic and big, without the need for much exposition. And it had just the right balance of humor, drama, and action!

Consigning the DandD movie. Ieant to see The Flash, but needed to work. Same with Indiana Jones. Will need to wait till it hits streaming. Just too damn busy at work to go to a cinema. At home, I cannot even remember. Might have been so long since I sat down at home for a couple of hours that it was The Lion in Winter, back at Xmas.

Went to see Indy 5 yesterday. I have mixed feelings. It really appealed to my nostalgia and I did like the puzzle solving element toward the climax (kinda reminded me of playing Tomb Raider games in the late 90s, which were definitely filling an Indiana Jones void themselves so things come full circle!) but there were just maybe one or two too many chase sequences. I think the run time hurts it, 2 hours is perfect for an Indiana Jones film and this one went over that by quite a bit.

We got home and watched There Will Be Blood and Men in Black - films we've seen before and love. Men in Black is obviously another childhood nostalgia trip. Says it all that the recommendation that popped up after Men in Black was the third one, nobody wants to watch the second it seems!

Mrs Harris Goes to Paris, at home. Can't remember the last movie I saw in a cinema.

I enjoyed it very much. I'd put off watching it because I remember the book ending - Paul Gallico likes to tug at the heartstrings - but the screenwriters tweaked it enough to put a smile on my face. I especially liked how they tied it in with all the stuff that was going on in Paris at the time, and the sudden philosophical discussions that people kept having - even in London afterwards. And the frocks were to die for. Wonderful.

What's your current fandom?

I'm in between fandoms/obsessions. Nothing seems to grab me lately. And I just got to wondering what others are up to or where the fandom action is these days. So, what's your fandom now? Is it new or maybe a solid old fandom?

Best fandom for kink?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think there was one fandom that generally had better quality kinkfic? Or maybe it depends on the kink, like one fandom did D/s amazingly but another had all the best pet play or whatever.

Do fandoms still do kink memes? I'm showing my age here but I remember them being really fun during the LJ days.

Tips for vacation in the UK?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone from or who travels/travelled around the UK in here?

My mom and I want to go to the UK for ten days in early September. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to go and what to do? We already did a trip around Wales in the past and a few days in London.

We thought about Scotland (hiking?) or maybe the south of England, but we don't have any concrete ideas yet. We'll probably rent a car, but thought about maybe a guided trip (bus tour?) might be fun as well.

The only thing is that I don't want to stay in hostels anymore. Done those during previous trips and I'm more than happy to spend a little more and get a hotel or b&b now that I'm not a poor student anymore.
