Yes, the writers. The only reason writers have characters get pregnant is for a baby plot. What other reason is there?

To write an abortion plot?

For the exploration of "consequence" to sex. For the exploration of how characters emotionally handle the idea of procreating. For the exploration of if the character wants kids or not. For the exploration of an abortion plotline. Hell you could even have a character get pregnant with the only reason being a different way to kill off a character. Pregnancy does not always equal babies.

DA - adoption plotline, infidelity plotline, alien abduction plotline - the possibilities are literally endless.

Different lurker dropping in to add -

Miscarriage plotline, induced with lemon juice and parsely leaves (or a bunch of other things that were not secret before the church burned people for knowing how to terminate a pregnancy), discovered the existence of menstrual extractors and DIYed or bought one, used black magic or other unusual means (not a very reliable method in this world, but hey, if you're writing fantasy it can be infallible), traded fetus to a friendly demon in exchange for various powers ... just off the top of my head.

ayrt - excellent additions!

I always think when people say this whole "the writers have to do X for Y reasons!" they are just outing themselves for not being creative thinkers. And if writers "have" to do something then those writers lack imagination and creativity.
