So many fanartists are mediocre to bad and get all sorts of praise and people buying their stuff. I don't understand it. Like are they all just friends being kind and supporting people or do people just have way lower standards of "good" than I do? It shall forever be a mystery.

The standards being set are very simple: do you understand what the fandom likes, wants, and occasionally finds insider joke style funny?

Then you may occasionally sell stuff at a convention. For some fan artists, the journey is the entire point of their artistic forays. They want to hobnob with their fellow art club friends, get some sweet autographs and convention pix, and afford a safe trip home. Oftentimes they wouldn't be able to afford this trip if they didn't sell something fandom related.
