When mermaid tails bend like they have knees. It's a fish! Fish don't have knees! They can't bend like that! I know this is silly because mermaids aren't real, and if they were, who's to say they wouldn't have evolved with more humanlike joints.

Names that are really common in media but not in real life. Why do all writers think there are so many average women out there named Penny and Olive? I've never met a Penny or an Olive. Those aren't the only names like that, just two I could think of the quickest. It bugs me less when the character isn't a normal human, e.g. every demon boy in supernatural romance being named Damien. That's cliche, but I still find it less annoying.

why does every crappy 50's movie have a woman named Betty in it?

Well, for this particular name, it was in the top 10 names from 1921 to 1944, according to Social Security name data. Which means that there were a lot a lot of women in their 20s and 30s with that name by the time the 50s rolled around. Mary, the number 1 for all of those years plus a lot more, probably isn't as representative the era as the writers would like. It's really kind of fascinating how different US names rise and fall in popularity. Social Security name data is often how I look for names for minor original characters or canon characters that as yet have no first name (for real, canon writers really, really need to give every significant character first and last names) in fics (most of my fandoms are US-based) - where the names fall in the top 1000 matters for how much I want the name to stand out or not.

The mermaid thing annoys me so much! Whenever I see mermaid art with a mermaid sitting with her "knees" scrunched up, I'm just like WHAT ARE YOU DOING. Why would a tail act just like human legs? Related: I also hate it when mermaids have butt cheeks.

Mermaid ass bugs me so much! All I see is "oh you want to be clear this is a /fuckable/ mermaid"

When it's a mermaid costume, sure, fine, can't do much about that, but art/CGI? No knees, please!
