Silly things that bother you

(Anonymous) 2023-07-04 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I just learned that the band The Maine is from Arizona and in fact have no relation to Maine.

Huh, I would have assumed they were named after the USS Maine rather than the state

Well, the USS Maine was named after the state.

There are so many silly things that bother me that when trying to pick just one my brain blanks.

Same, that just happened to me when I tried.

Their name came from a song they really liked called Coast of Maine.

Silly thing that bothers me is people not responding to the question in their replies.

Hahaha that was me over the weekend on two threads. Named users commenting even after the new post went up but they wouldn’t answer my direct questions. I suspect in both cases it was because they were full of shit and didn’t like getting called on it.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-04 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I thought discussing the content of the top comment would also be considered on-topic.

Re: Silly things that bother you

(Anonymous) 2023-07-04 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
That's why I always add my own story in an extra reply when doing threads like this. First the question, then my own answer separately in a reply. This way people can react separately.

If you don’t mind me asking, what is this in reference to? Other people seem to get it, and it seems like it should be simple to get. But I feel like I’m missing something, like context or an example, or something.

I was reading an MCU fic and it seemed like the author thought Malibu was somewhere north of New York City and a few hours drive away.

Listicles where it is clear the author isn't really familiar with something on the list.

Any article about a video that doesn't actually include that video, so you have to click through another link to get to the video.

On YouTube, any ad longer than the video I want to watch, especially something like a full show episode or movie (I know I can skip them and I do, it just annoys me).

There’s ads that long on YouTube?? I’ve never gotten one of those before, but I suppose I’d believe it.

OMG those MCU fics where Steve is just gonna pop on over to the Triskelion from Stark Tower on his motorcycle because he has a meeting in an hour. Like, no, honey, no.

At least they're in the right country, unlike Boards of Canada.

Unicorns

(Anonymous) 2023-07-04 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
The modern interpretation and depiction of unicorns as "horse with horn" annoys me. It's silly, but there it is.

When mermaid tails bend like they have knees. It's a fish! Fish don't have knees! They can't bend like that! I know this is silly because mermaids aren't real, and if they were, who's to say they wouldn't have evolved with more humanlike joints.

Names that are really common in media but not in real life. Why do all writers think there are so many average women out there named Penny and Olive? I've never met a Penny or an Olive. Those aren't the only names like that, just two I could think of the quickest. It bugs me less when the character isn't a normal human, e.g. every demon boy in supernatural romance being named Damien. That's cliche, but I still find it less annoying.

Damn yes I hate mermaid knees.

The mermaid thing annoys me so much! Whenever I see mermaid art with a mermaid sitting with her "knees" scrunched up, I'm just like WHAT ARE YOU DOING. Why would a tail act just like human legs? Related: I also hate it when mermaids have butt cheeks.

When it's a mermaid costume, sure, fine, can't do much about that, but art/CGI? No knees, please!

Re: Silly things that bother you

By now, sidecuts and undercuts on just about any character design. I didn't mind them when it started to get super popular ~15+ years ago but I'm so damn over it by now, especially since it's basically turned into the laziest fucking shorthand for "edgy redesigns".

I’ve never liked those cuts, personally.

Don't name him Jack, goddamnit

(Anonymous) 2023-07-04 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
At least 70% of leading male characters in america/american characters are named fucking John or Jack.

John McClane
John Connor
John Rambo
John Stewart
John Spartan
John Wick
John Sheppard
John "Jack" O'Neill
Jack Bauer
Jack Sparrow
Jack Reacher
Jack Ryan
Jack Harkness
etc etc etc

Can we PLEASE give men some variety in names?

Re: Don't name him Jack, goddamnit

(Anonymous) 2023-07-04 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Given that probably 2/3 of the men I deal with on a daily basis are named some variation of Steven, Christopher, Nicholas, Robert or John, I'd say that giving men some variety in names is something we need to work on in general.
