Amen.

I don't know any nerd girls that don't shave their legs. Is this a new trend? If so I fully support it.

Signed,
Someone in a female body who hasn't shaved anything in about 20 years and still somehow gets a lot of flak for it

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Dunno, for what it’s worth I am one.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-04 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't be surprised if writers/animators just thought women were naturally hairless. It's like in The Walking Dead/any post apocalyptic setting. How do the women have shaved pits/legs??

(Anonymous) 2023-07-04 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Animating body hair is a piercing pain in the ass: that's why despite Gaston's boast, he looks like he's had a full waxing.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking the same. I mean how many men in cartoons or anime have animated body hair?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
NA

It might have been a comment secret and the picture a coincidence, but in the same game the girl in the image is from there's a teenage boy who runs around in a low cut tank top and shorts in the summer and he's as hairless as the girl in the secret.

There's also a beach scene with all the boys and we see at least one "manly" adult male in nothing but a Speedo and cape in the game and none of them have any body hair either as far as I recall.

I think it's fair to say that in this case it really is just animation convenience.

I feel like it comes down to nerd stuff being a traditionally "masculine" hobby, so any women that like nerd stuff are thought to just be doing it to get attention from men. So cue all the confusion and vitriol when they see a nerdy girl who doesn't care about seeming conventionally attractive.

Why not?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I was an awkward, nerdy girl and I did. And my mom didn't teach me to or anything - I got it from magazines and TV. It's a little different now than from when I was growing up, but not that much. And no one should have to shave to not get made fun of or to fit in better with what other people think is right, but I'd bet a fair number of people do it for those reasons.

Re: Why not?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've always shaved just because I like the feeling of my legs being smooth. I do it even in the winter for that reason.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, even if she had body hair that's not a realistic nerdy anime girl at all. Her clothes are half off, how's she meant to use a keyboard while adjusting her top every five seconds? That's sexy nerd cosplay. (I was a nerdy girl and did not shave my legs right through high school, despite a uniform that showed my legs. But my nerdy female friends did.)

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Why is she wearing summer clothes but a winter jacket?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe she's like those kids in my classes at the community college back in the '90s who wore shorts in December in Illinois.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Because anime.

Is this a post-90s thing? If so, cool, glad we've evolved into more choices, because everyone but me shaved their legs when I was a teen girl, nerds included.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know why you'd think that. I was a messy, awkward nerd girl and most of my friends were as well. We shaved our leg/armpit hair because that's just what you did. Not doing so would've been fairly rebellious by the social standards of the time and would've opened us up to everything from teasing to outright bullying.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
can confirm, am messy awkward nerd girl

it's not that i prefer being hairy even (like a looooooooooootta my tumblr mutuals do), it's just effort to remove it and i can't be assed

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a messy awkward nerd girl who occasionally shaves, and it's mostly because it gets itchy and uncomfortable in the summer if I don't. I'm all for more non-shaving rep in media, though.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. I think there are actually different subcultures of nerd girl, and some shave and some don't. In fact, I think only a minority of the subcultures don't shave, and can be summarised thusly:

Nerd girl basement dweller = no shave

Awkward nerd girl with questionable hygiene = no shave

Nerd girl multiclassed with hippie/feminist/activist girl = no shave

From there, it's just personal preference whether an individual nerd girl shaves or not.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
On average Japanese girls don't have that much body hair to begin with.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Didn’t know that.

I kind of agree but also I'm someone whose legs look naturally smooth like that without needing to shave them at all. I agree with person above -- East Asian people in general grow less and thinner hair on average in a way that means the above look is pretty manageable without shaving for some people.

DA

Secret third option: am natural redhead, all hair on my arms/legs is white and pretty much indistinguishable from my skin colour
