To be fair you don't actually need to buy figs to be a Warhammer fan. I suspect in some ways it probably makes it easier, if anything.

I only ever read the books. Shame the Warhammer fantasy side nuked the lore in the reboot.

You can absolutely be a fan of the setting without buying any of the figures, if anything I'd recommend that. Don't sink into the pit. It's all consuming and takes years to crawl out of.

I know there are a lot of people who are just into the setting or the lore, or who just read the novels, if those things count.

Definitely just read the books. They're easy enough to find online. The minis are a terrible time and money sink.

I have SO MANY THINGS to paint. ;o;
