To be fair you don't actually need to buy figs to be a Warhammer fan. I suspect in some ways it probably makes it easier, if anything.

One of my friends loves this game, so there's definitely people who agree with you OP, the internet just makes any love or hate fans have for a piece of media seem far more inflated than it is. The people who are quietly enjoying something don't tend to make posts about why it's great/sucks.

You can absolutely be a fan of the setting without buying any of the figures, if anything I'd recommend that. Don't sink into the pit. It's all consuming and takes years to crawl out of.

That's been a thing since the beginning, though usually the translators turn these into more fantastic-ish names (like Tina into Terra or Aaron into Auron). Wonder why they stopped?
