Questions Thread

Do you have a question that you hope FS can help answer for you? I have one. I hope other people will too?

Does "Marnock and Ninian College" sound like it would fit in as a constituent college of Cambridge University? After a pair of obscure Celtic saints. I'm workshopping some names for a fic. TIA

I'm not a Brit, I just read/watch British mysteries but just "Ninian College" sounds more fitting.

What is it like living in Utah?

Re: Questions Thread

(Anonymous) 2023-07-09 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
I live a state over but I have friends who lived in Utah. Some points:

-mountains/deserts
-salt lake city is the biggest city and it's not close. Most people live around there and then everywhere else is little towns.
-slc has both worse air quality and a bigger gay scene than you'd expect.
-Mormon built cities/towns have a particular naming structure to their roads based on where the temple is.
-mormanism/the church of Jesus Christ of the latter day saints is huge.
-mostly white people by a huge majority
-a big feature of the "accent" is we swallow internal "t"s. So mountain-> moun-ain. Water-> wah-er. We do this in my state too but it's always referred to as a Utah thing and it cracks me up.

Do you have any specific questions? I could ask around.

A long tall glass of preachiness, and garnish of smug.

Soda, iced tea, lemonade, coffee or hot tea depending on the season.

Sameish as above anon because iced tea, lemonade and soda, particularly lemon soda, are my faves!

Soda or an Arnold Palmer.

Iced tea, water, a coke. If it's a fancy place maybe a mock-tail.

I drink alcohol, but if I am in a bar when I am not going to drink I usually go for mock cocktails, they are fun. And tea at some point. But I go for tea even if I am drinking.

Normally I get a soda and tip extra because I'm not there to buy drinks.

Generally, soda or water, occasionally lemonade or coffee. If it's a brewery and they brew their own root beer, that's usually pretty good.

Mocktails if they have them, I love an alcohol-less mojito.

I'm in a country where juice mixed with sparkling water is a thing, so if they don't have mocktails or if the mocktails are too expensive I'll have one if those. If I'm traveling in a country that doesn't have those, probably a coke.

I often just don't get a drink, but sometimes water.

If they have mocktails, I get one of those, and if not, I'll ask for a virgin sunrise or Shirley Temple, because those ingredients are usually available.

And personally, I'm always so much more impressed when a bar/bartender can readily offer mocktails, because it means that a) they know their ingredients well, b) they're a considerate enough establishment to offer these kinds of alternatives no questions asked, and c) as a grown-ass adult I can have a fancy drink in a fancy glass instead of always getting stuck with water

Just a coke. As a person who medically cannot drink, I didn't go out to bars/pubs often, but I when I did go for live music, the bartender was very cool about it, my entire party wound up not drinking and having a good time, and no one was weird or rude about it. I guess from the bar's perspective, it was still a win to sell sodas to people who wouldn't have been in the bar buying drinks anyway if it wasn't for the music act, and the other patrons were too busy having their own nice time to worry about us.

Lemonade or whatever juice is available.

Although the last bar I went to with friends had mock-tails, which was fun to try out (I can't remember the name but I had a lime-rasberry mix that was really nice)

I drink, but if I don't feel like it... usually a cranberry seltzer, sometimes with lime. If I really want something sweet, then a virgin cocktail.

coke usually (or localised equivalent)

What is involved with a PhD in journalism?

Re: Questions Thread

(Anonymous) 2023-07-09 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
No idea, but it's a field being murdered. No one wants to pay for actual journalism. Journalists also have a VERY hard time getting insured. For anything, really.
