Re: Do you speak more than one language?

as someone who speaks just enough Japanese to easily get around the country as a tourist, is there a point where it becomes comfortable to just speak and understand, vs reading or filling out forms? I also have memory problems due to an autoimmune disease so straight up memorizing kanji is right out, it's a crapshoot what will stick vs what my brain can't grasp, but speaking feels more comfortable so long as I get my participles right. Still working on ni versus de and wa versus ga but the spirit is there and the verbs are right.

good luck on your crochet. we've got air quality warnings AGAIN and possible severe storms so it looks like yet again, I will be indoors doing jack and shit instead of canoeing or hiking.

Re: What are some fandoms you would have totally been in when you were younger....

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
when I was younger there was no such thing as fandom outside of actual RL fan groups, so I don't think I missed out by only entering internet fandom in 1999.

That said, if the internet was a thing in the 1980s/early 90s, there would have been enormous geocities shrines to The Young Riders (Josh Brolin? A Baldwin? ship wars over who gets to het-fuck the girl disguised as a man with 1000 "character sees them getting it on and thinks X is gay" fics? POC rep for the ex-slave and the Kiowa? what do you mean one of the characters is literally disabled?). The show was 20 years ahead of its time, high school me would have been a BNF with my fic if there was the kind of internet that we have today.

I've had forced comments and worshipping/critique attached to my writing since I learned to write (mostly because of school, I'll be honest, but still), and after a couple decades, I'd much rather save my breath for the stuff that REALLY wows me, and likewise I'd rather get 2 genuine comments than 200 useless cookie cutter participation stickers

literally the only reason I write, let alone post fic. Idea will not leave brain, must put into text. The five people in the world looking for this exact plot will love it.

Nah, can't agree.

We also have severe storms! Are you in the midwest?

Re: Do you speak more than one language?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Just English and a bit of Spanish.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Do they have to specify that it's their opinion though?

Is this genuinely a question you need to ask?? O_o

Yes, you need to specify. Stating a fact and giving an opinion are two different things. You cant do one and expect people to respond as if you did the other. This is communicating 101, anon. Okay, maybe 201; it comes after 'say please' and 'don't interrupt other people when they're talking.'

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Considering what you got for a comment, this is the perfect reply.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
This, so much.

Re: My aroace people, how do you deal with being the 3rd wheel?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I would pass, but I also don't really like people so I'm probably not the best person to ask lol.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, if the only reason you're writing is for external validation, then yeah, you should probably stop writing.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
100% this. I'd much, much rather get one comment genuinely telling me what they loved about my fic than 50 "this was great, write more pls!"

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
That's just like your opinion man

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT
I feel so awkward when I see authors talking with their friends and ignoring other people's comments. I've got an instant feeling they probably don't want comment from a stranger

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'd half agree, but the ones that seem like they're trying to roll a boulder uphill and shrieking about its being so hard are the people who go to a site where no one is obligated to comment and feel gypped by the amount (or lack) of comments they get.

While I think a lot of the rest of us went, "this is an archive where my work - and everyone else's - will not be censored by busybodies or deleted by corporations. I can download anything I want with the click of a button. I can invite everyone I know who writes for canons and doesn't have a safe place to keep their writing. We can socialize or not as we please. Having an account doesn't cost me a penny. And this is the most fine-grained search function I've seen anywhere. I have truly discovered paradise."

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
DA, but...

It's exactly as much of an opinion as "if you omit the word please before you ask someone to do something, they may well interpret what you're trying to do as giving them an order as opposed to asking them to do you a favor." In other words, it's a social norm that is widely held, and you will get rude replies for ignoring. Because the people around you will very likely think you were intentionally rude to them, first.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT - Dude, it's incredibly obvious what you're doing. You're just embarrassing yourself at this point.

Re: What are some fandoms you would have totally been in when you were younger....

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
I have never not known fandom was a thing, even in my 80s childhood when very little of it was online (and I had no access to that part).

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, it seems like this too. I am not saying that studios should stop hiring non-white non-cismales how other anon implies. But they absolutely position this actors as a bait.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
If this is how you feel, then yes, it might be time for you to quit, at least for a while.

Also, I hope you composed this secret with the deliberate intention of phrasing it as belligerently as possible, because otherwise, yikes.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
lol course you do

Re: Do you speak more than one language?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
well yeah, I am not from English-speaking country so at least two - my own language and English. Also I am trying to relearn German (learned it at Uni but forgot most of it). And I know some basic sign language
