I hope your sleep helps you feel better. It never seems to help me when I get sinus stuff because I hate not being able to breath!

Ah dang. Good luck. I've started downloading all the fics I read. Got over 1500 downloaded! Did she say why she deleted them?

While I'm happy enough to get kudos, a comment or two would make me so much happier and more likely to continue writing in the fandom. Doesn't matter in a large fandom, but in a small fandom it does. Couple of dozens of kudos, and no-one being arsed to do more than expend the almighty effort to press that button, do not make for a happy author. It's the ultimate in "meh" or "could do better" as a response.

Yes, it's anxiety-inducing to post a comment. Oddly enough, it's anxiety-inducing to post a fic too. So we tend to stop doing it if we get just kudos dispensed from on high. And then there's no more fic in a small fandom as the author heads off to friendlier spaces.

Or to put it another way, I agree, in a way, OP.

........well, okay.

Others above have explained how to deactivate those mails. I personally did it because my email inboxes are already pretty unmanageable LOL.

I get getting discouraged at a lack of commentary, I do. I hope deactivating those mails helps you disengage and think less about it, because frankly... Assuming you've done everything everyone and their mother tells you to do to get your fics Out There, ort of completely changing what you want to write, which would only end up with you feeling more miserable and with a mediocre story, there's little you can do.

No! I'm slowly watching them in order and am only up to Hatshepsut: The Forgotten Pharaoh.

Pretty much. Dreamwidth is about the only company I can think of that actually has the ability to say "we care about [disabled accessibility, or gay rights, or whatever]" and then follow through like they mean it.

I would love to know how to get that kind of commitment and integrity out of umpteen zillion other soulless, stockholder-enriching capitalist machines, but I have no idea what that would entail.

On the other hand, I do notice that Dreamwidth wastes very little energy on virtue *signalling.* When they make a statement about some politically-relevant issue, it's usually because it affects how they code this site and intend to run it. Which strikes me as a much more tangible service to any of the communities they've expressed support for.

That sucks. Glad you are enjoying it (my sister has been playing it a ton).

The photo in the secret immediately think of the description of Ford Prefect where "he smiled slightly too broadly and gave people the unnerving impression that he was about to go for their neck." I don't actually know anything about her (I avoid news and most social media in general for anxiety reasons) but she really needs to take that grin down a notch or four.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-14 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. He was a rapist in the show as well. I think they changed the plot a bit though? I didn't watch the episode.

It would hardly be the first rapist fandom falls over itself to fawn for...

How can you spend the time it takes to make this secret about how much getting kudos hurts your feelings but not learn how to use the free platform you’re whining about? You really suck, OP. Gorgeous secret though.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-14 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I still haven't seen the promo, just the reaction to it.

Was it a commercial? A display? What?

What are some fandoms you would have totally been in when you were younger....

(Anonymous) 2023-07-14 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
if you had known fandom was a thing?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-14 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The level of hate she got isn’t surprising but I bet the lack of support from Anhauser-Busch was. Budweiser is shitty beer for shitty people and Bud Light is the lowliest piss on the planet. It’s also consumed in high volume by MAGA types. I’m not sure how anyone can say the transphobic hate was unexpected. Anyone with two brain cells could see it coming.

I don’t blame Dylan for taking the deal, rather Dylan’s advisors and the spineless pieces of shit at A-B who left her out dry. Obviously the transphobes are at fault here for the actual behavior but it was entirely predictable.

Idk why the responses are so hostile, I may find this secret odd but the point of fandom secrets is to share private thoughts about fandom hobbies isn't it? It's not that weird to have a weird hang-up about kudos, IMO. Do consider using the site features and add-ons suggested by the other replies though, it sounds like kudos annoy you and stress you out to a perhaps rather extreme level, and you may find a better fandom experience if you block your view of them.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-14 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I’ve read that story many times and cannot figure out why you’re calling him a rapist. In what language did you read the story? I wonder if it translates from Polish to other languages differently based on the target language?
I never saw that episode of the show though so maybe he did do what you claim there.

Re: Do you speak more than one language?

Native English speaker with some proficiency in Spanish, French, and German. A smattering of Portuguese thanks to a Brazilian friend. I read them better than I speak them but I speak them better than I write them.

"One day the gang robbed a temple in Gelibol and coerced Nivellen into raping the young priestess there. Before killing herself, she spat in his face and cursed him,"

From the wiki. He was the leader of the gang.

I speak four, which is pretty much standard where I'm from (you learn two foreign languages at school and usually pick up a third in uni). There's also a few languages that I can kinda understand, but not speak myself. I really want to learn sign language though.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-14 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
This kind of thing really irritated me in some of my fandoms, not familiar with this canon though. Not the fact that people liked fictional rapists as characters, I have plenty of favorite characters who have done absolutely awful things in the worlds of their canons, but the woobification that some fans get really into. Or just refusal to ever acknowledge that part of the story. I feel it does the character writing a disservice too, in situations where a well-written character has both sympathetic and revolting qualities I find that very interesting and don't want to pretend they never did that fucked up stuff! It sounds like in this case you weren't happy with how the canon handled the subject matter either, which I can't comment on, though I'll say I think it's totally reasonable to ditch a series if you personally have a problem with the way it handles sexual violence.

Why do you write fic or make fanart?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-14 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I find #1 OPs motivations weird, but hey maybe I'm the weird one! Or maybe we're all weird here!

I write fic because the writing is the fun part. An idea takes hold and it must be written - and yes, shared. Or sometimes I want a certain trope that I'm not seeing and so I write it myself to try and satisfy that itch. Other people enjoying it adds to the fun, but it's not my motivation.
