Most OCs really do suck so it isn’t surprising that people haven’t encountered any good ones. If they encounter enough of the majority, as they’re statistically likely to do, it’s reasonable that readers would avoid reading any more fics with OCs. I can see bias entering in IF they are cajoled into trying another OC fic but that wouldn’t apply to most people I know in fandom.
