I never saw the last season, but as someone who watched and enjoyed the early ones what you've described sounds like a completely different show and I'm baffled that it went in that direction. For me the entire charm of the show was his quirky career and personality, taking that away literally makes it not the same show anymore. Yeesh, I'm glad I never saw it and I don't think I ever will.
