It's one of the things I don't miss about having left Tumblr, actually. The e-begging is nasty and ubiquitous.

I assume at least some of the people putting their sob stories and GFM links on social media are stressing out over legitimately dire financial straits, because we've got plenty of those all over right now, but I get the impression that the whole site has a target painted on its back in terms of looking like a place to find people who have enough access to money to be idle and online a lot, and who also skew towards young and tender-hearted. The social justice posturing exacerbates the begging, too, because people feel like guilty hypocrites about not performing charity.

But it's part of a bigger problem of people on Tumblr not developing enough self-respect to reject would-be influencers for making up arbitrary and trivial infractions and claiming that anyone who violates them is "a bad person." That sort of behavior should be reason enough to mass-unfollow, and if it were, I think about nine-tenths of the people pretending to decide what's moral and immoral for everyone else would remember their manners in a real hurry.

If I could have one random, ultimately useless superpower, it would be that everyone who reblogs someone else's begging post would automatically have $5 of their own money donated to the cause for each additional time they reblog it. Because when the same person reblogs the same GFM link 3 times a week, they deserve to have some skin in the game.

Haaa. That would put an end to it right quick.
