Choose your orgasmic side.

"Cum" will make me back out of a fic.

Same, I hate it SO much. It just makes me cringe, it's like... visually repellent as a word?

God, this. Also, I fully acknowledge that this is a shit-stirring thing to say, but honestly, 95% of the fic that uses "cum" isn't very good in my experience. Yes I hate the word, but if the fic is really good, I will deal with it in order to keep reading. The actual reason I almost always back-button is because the fic already wasn't very good, and I was barely sticking with it as it was. So when the word "cum" pops up I'm usually not even surprised; it's just like, ah, yeah, this does read like a cum-fic. Oh well.

Come is a verb and cum is a noun. But only in smutfic. Cum in any other kind of fic is a backbutton offense.

Come. Cum looks silly and is an instant backbutton for me.

I kinda prefer 'cum' (especially for the substance) because there's no possible ambiguity when reading it, and because it feels dirtier.

But I'm not gonna backbutton based on it.

"Come". Dan Savage feels the same way I do about this.

Hating on cum is pathetic.

Caring about other people's fic preferences is pathetic.

Looks like we hit a nerve.

Sorry. I'm calm now. Don't know what cummed over me.

"Come." "Cum" makes me think of sleazy, poorly-written dudebro porn that squicks me.

To be completely honest, I preferred "come" up until I became sexually active, LOL. Now I don't really care, but "come" sometimes sounds too formal and "cum" sounds dirtier and more like something the characters would say. I personally like the word choice to match the characters and setting, so whatever is right for that particular scene is what I prefer, I suppose.

"Cum" is an instant nope for me. It comes across as deeply immature to me, and also just the wrong kind of filthy. I completely disagree with the people who say that "cum" is dirtier than "come"; I read some eleven-out-of-ten FILTHY smut that is no less filthy because it uses "come" and not "cum."

"Cum" is not more filthy, IMO, it's just different filthy, and for me it's the wrong kind of filthy.

Also, for me "cum" is always going to evoke the wildly objectifying het-male pornography that was basically 99% of pornographic content when I was growing up. The kind that treats women like bouncy, pouty holes to be fucked*. ("Busty cum slut gets railed," or, "Cum-hungry librarian three-on-one," or, "Barely legal brunette couldn't get enough of my hot cum," or fucking whatever. Female bodies waxed and oiled and painted and inflated and posed to evoke no personality or individuality beyond what flavor of sex toy this one is.) There is just nothing that is ever going to scrub that association off of the word for me, sorry.

*There is nothing morally wrong with people liking porn that objectifies women. It's whatever. Kink tomato. But there's also nothing wrong with me saying it makes me want to weld my fucking legs shut, and anything I associate with that kind of pornography is not exactly conducive to my enjoyment.

Yes. To all of this, yes yes yes.

That's interesting, I see where you're coming from and why it would be a huge turnoff. My association of the term with gay porn and gay cruising is why "cum" sounds more natural and dirty to me in some contexts personally.

This, exactly.

For convenience's sake I use "cum", but personally I prefer "come".

The comments in this thread (and on FS in general whenever this topic comes up) have me wondering where all the other readers even find enough fics to know whether or not "cum" vs "come" is a good indicator of "bad" vs "good" fic.
In my experience 99.95% fics with smut use "cum" so to say that most/all fics that use "cum" over "come" are usually badly written smut is a bit...off.

Like, when I do come across "come" in fic it doesn't always mean guaranteed good smut.

I'm the anon who said the vast majority of fics I read that use "cum" aren't very good anyway. In most of the fandoms I've been in, I would say only 1–2% of the fics have used "cum," but recently I've been in a couple where the percentage was more like 30–40% using it. I have never been in a fandom where the majority used it, thank god.

In the fandoms where 30–40% use "cum," most of the fics that use it are like 2K or shorter, with zero plot or establishing structure or characterization to speak of; just porn. Or, alternatively, they're mundane AUs where one of the characters has basically no characterization and exists as a proxy for the author/reader, while the other character is whatever type of sexual experience the author finds hottest.

None of this is in any way invalid. It's all fine, and if this is what does it for people, good for them. But as I read fanfic for the characters and the dynamics and the story as well as for smut, personally I find fanfic that lacks all but the latter to be badly written.

I have read the occasional fic that used "cum" and was otherwise fairly well written, but exceedingly few.
