I can turn my brain off pretty heavily for fanfic. Not enough to enjoy really bad writing, but enough to enjoy writing that is barely decent by fanfic standards.

I can turn my brain off for original fiction, too, IF the story manages to engage me anyway. But those instances are the exception not the rule.

Weirdly, the type of media I'm the least able to turn my brain off for is film. For some reason I just can't do it. TV is my favorite fictional medium, but for some reason my critical brain is also the most active and engaged when film is the medium. EXCEPT when alcohol is involved. If I want to have fun watching something trashy, I have to be drinking. I can't turn my brain of myself; I have to get alcohol to do it for me.
