I'm sorry but all I can see is "Cum your brain off and just have fun with it" and I was like "yeah, that's pretty bad writing." It took me several reads to realize my mistake.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-16 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This also took me two or three reads

(Anonymous) 2023-07-16 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Your comment made me realize this wasn't intentional. "Cum your brain" seems like a solid idea

(Anonymous) 2023-07-16 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, me too.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-16 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Cum your brain off and just have fun with it" is my new writing motto going forward!

(Anonymous) 2023-07-16 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Shit, was that not the intention? The previous secret already had me in mind of smutfic, so "cum your brain off" just made perfect sense.

This surprised a laugh out of me. Thank you for that XD

(Anonymous) 2023-07-16 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Same, but honestly I'm here for the giggles it inspires

(Anonymous) 2023-07-16 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Secret anon share this one with us - that was the intention wasn't it

(Anonymous) 2023-07-17 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Fucking same, and I am cackling over it. "Cum your brain off and just have fun with it," is the BEST smut motto. Wisdom for the ages.

Add me to the list of confused folks!

It is possible to appreciate a gourmet meal and to also enjoy dipping your fries in the Frosty. But, different strokes for different folks and all.

I'm kinda similar with art styles and visual media. There's some shows animated or live action that for whatever reason I can't get into at all because either the artstyle of the animation just icks me so so so much or something about the film quality of really old movies just irritates me.

Tho I try not to be an ass about things. I don't comment on the quality of the story of something I can't watch myself or like anime with art styles I find obnoxious (dragon ball for example) . Also with friend's artstyles I would sooner launch myself into the sun than tell them I find something off about their style because I like them.

Though asshole people like Stonetoss I have no qualms saying that even outside of the grossness of the comics, the art style is appallingly H I D E O U S.

If I find myself mentally rewriting the prose, I have to be mighty interested in the content to persevere. I read a lot of mysteries and there are a couple of series about special interests of mine that I stick with even though I think the prose is terrible. But a lot of thrillers strike me as just badly written and I cannot read them. I can't get past the writing. Everyone has the thing that gets on their nerves!

I feel that, OP. Don't get me wrong, I can totally turn off my brain and just enjoy a not-very-good piece of media as a fun thing, but... not books. Books engage me on a different level than watching a TV show or movie, so bad writing tends to spoil it for me.
queenslayerbee: Isabelle Adjany as Lucy Harker in 1979's "Nosferatu the Vampire". She's surrounded by darkness, looking over her shoulder while she wears a white nightgown and a cross as a necklace. A hand with long nails like a claw is reaching for her neck from the darkness behind her. (Default)

AGREED.

Look. Part of art *is* the style. Visually appealing films & shows, good melodies in a song (I swear some people act like songs are just about lyrics lol), breathtaking and effective prose in books... Yes, the ~substance matters, but the "package" is important, dammit xD

(this is one of the reasons I'm tired of hearing people criticise more descriptive/less simplistic prose as ALWAYS being a negative... why do you hate beautiful things xDD)

Valid. I couldn’t say where exactly I draw the line lbut about half the fic in any of my fandoms is too awful to read. I care a lot more about characterisation than grammar, though. Good characterisation can boost poor writing and terrible characterisation can kill a well written fic. My mood at the time can also come into play, as well as the premise of the fic.

I can turn my brain off pretty heavily for fanfic. Not enough to enjoy really bad writing, but enough to enjoy writing that is barely decent by fanfic standards.

I can turn my brain off for original fiction, too, IF the story manages to engage me anyway. But those instances are the exception not the rule.

Weirdly, the type of media I'm the least able to turn my brain off for is film. For some reason I just can't do it. TV is my favorite fictional medium, but for some reason my critical brain is also the most active and engaged when film is the medium. EXCEPT when alcohol is involved. If I want to have fun watching something trashy, I have to be drinking. I can't turn my brain of myself; I have to get alcohol to do it for me.

Objectively seeing writing as "good" vs "bad" can carry with you only so far as to why certain/most fics don't appeal to you.

TBH I hate these sorts of overly simplified takes as if it's simple knowledge for all of us to be in consensus on what "good writing" in fan fiction/fiction/writing in general us.

"Good" as in the fic is generally/absolutely solid in its grammar and the setup, delivery and payoff are well done?
Or "good" as in you enjoyed the fic because the premise pitched to me paid off?

What if the story you're reading is a stream of consciousness and the lack of grammar is the point?
One can argue your expectations of "good writing" is shallow/missing more context by writing said fic off as bad simply because it didn't meet your standards of proper/good grammar.

There's a difference between "I wish the fics I read had better grammar/better delivery in storytelling/etc" and "I only read fics that have good writing".

Yeah, what is good writing to you and why do you expect your fandom(s) to adhere to your expectations?
