Do you prefer that your ships become canon, or prefer when they don't? Why?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-21 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Inspired by 1#. If you have a strong preference for your ship becoming canon or not, why?

Personally, I prefer they don't become canon, for one I tend to have silly taste in ships, so they won't make sense, another is that I think it's more fun to build into it myself.

Honestly I don't care either way anymore. I ship what I ship. If it ends up in canon and is done well, great. If it ends up in canon and is done badly, it might ruin my shipping. If it isn't canon, I'll probably keep shipping either way.

I screen my media. I don't watch anything until it's over and I know they didn't fuck things up. So if the fan consensus is that they screwed up the dynamic after A/B went canon and most people stopped watching after season x, I don't bother watching it at all. There's more media out there than any one person can watch in a lifetime, so I'm gonna go for stuff that won't obviously disappoint me.

All that to say, I know going in what will be canon and what won't, so the question for me is more will *I* ship the canon ship or ship a different pairing? And it honestly makes no difference to me.

No, don't really have a strong preference. Sometimes my ship becoming canon just makes sense for a story and I am glad that plot goes there. Sometimes I don't need it. It's more fun to have it as fandom thing.
But I don't remember from the top of my head any media there canon ruined my ship for me. I think If I don't believe in writers I check out looong before any ship becoming canon or not.

I can’t say I care either way honestly, I’ve had canon ships go badly I’ve had canon ships be really fun. I think for the most part I’m pretty chill about what canon does and it’s rare a canon fucks up so bad with a ship I like that it ruins it for me.

I slightly prefer it to become canon but I'm not all dramatic if it doesn't. I will silently seethe, though if the people making the show decide/explicitly state that my ship is their NOTP.

+1000

I had this happen to one of mine and it really sucked.

Not unless I have proof the creators/author can do romance well. Danny/Sam was a shitshow.

I'm leaning toward canon but I know that doesn't always happen. And as mentioned in today's secrets, the writers could just totally do a crap job of writing the ship.

Keep in mind I will ship even if it doesn't become canon.

A perfect ship for me is one that gets a LOT of gas poured on it in canon but it's open-ended when the show or movie or whatever ends. And obviously the characters don't get paired up with someone else or die, haha.

A show usually doesn't put the characters together in a satisfying way for me. I'd rather read fic about the possibilities.

I have a strong preference for my het ships not becoming canon (because they always mess up the female character and sometimes the male character too). I've never had an m/m ship go canon, but two f/f ships did! One was right at the end, so couldn't mess it up, the other was great until they killed one of them.

So I guess my preference is for the writing to be consistent and not killing gay characters, not whether or not the ship is canon.

I think my ideal would be for them to become canon, or heavily implied canon, at the very end.

Though if TPTB simply continue to write the characters and their relationship well, and don't put obstacles in the way to try to discourage people from shipping it, that's a close second for me.

Canon, but not until the final episode so the producers cannot fuck them up too much. Give a writer or producer too much time and they will fuck up everything badly.

I don't really have a preference provided both are written well. I mostly ship m/m and f/f though so I rarely get to see them become canon (Barry was a recent and delightful surprise though!).

I've been disappointed by the *vast* majority of canon ships. And many of my ships are dark/messed up (I like them that way!) so I don't want them to be canon.

Occasionally, very very VERY occasionally, a canon ship works. Nate/Sophie and Parker/Hardison(+Elliot) from Leverage, Rogue/Gambit, Winter Soldier/Black Widow, and Wiccan/Hulklin from super hero comics, Zoe/Wash from Firefly, and basically every relationship from Discworld. But then I'm satisfied by them and don't actively "ship" them. I don't put a lot of energy in, they're just cool.

In general, if I ship two characters and they aren't already together I don't want them to get together. If they start out together, or get together very quickly and I know that their relationship can be well done before I get invested, maybe it works.
