I enjoy having ships in things I watch but not to the point where I stop watching a show/movie if I don't have one. Ships for me are a bonus and there's a lot of media I love where I don't ship anything because I like the thing by itself.

I dunno about disengaging from a story entirely, but I understand the disappointment that comes with seeing your ship officially treated like crap, or just written in the least satisfying way. It's worse when your ship does get written well for a while, and then a new batch of writers come in thinking the show is only about THEY want and fuck everything else historically, and then sink your ship because they felt like it. Goddamn I fucking hate shitty writers.

Canon ruining a ship can ruin it for me (like House/Cuddy). But not all canons do terribly with ships. So it really depends on the fandom for me. I do tend to ship in fandoms, though. There are only one or two I don't really have a ship for.

I'll enjoy and appreciate a story well enough even if I don't get a ship out of it, I like stories! but admit that my engagement with the show will be considerably low in comparison to something where I do have a ship or there is a world I can engage with or insert myself into, so I get it.

I feel a bit guilty about it because there are definitely stories that get ruined when the writers try too hard to make it something that would make a fandom, but sadly it's because fandoms are one of the few ways things survive nowadays...

Also, yeah, It's not even that I get frustrated with canon romances, but I also prefer my ships remaining non-canon.

I don't know what kinds of stuff you like to watch, but if you like dramatic romcoms, Our Flag Means Death has a good ship, and lots of background ships both canon and not. I can't say that the show is particularly *realistic* but it has more than decent writing. And the showrunner just said of the main ship "the show is the relationship", so I don't think he's going to do us dirty once they get together for real.

I'd like to say that I think Ben Wyatt and Leslie Knope were a great canon couple.

i actually agree about ships that aren't canon to begin with, except when writers actually understand that even in romance character comes first when you want to successfully continue that romance, in which case it's great! leslie and ben as said above is a great example.

I once saw something that was actively worse than Thomas. It was also trains, but it was meant as an educational tool to teach autistic children how to read facial expressions, so the trains had live-action human faces. (I forget the title, though.)

LoL I have a certain charm for Thomas the Tank engine. Idk if it's because of my weird love of model trains or model sets or the live action train station bits with Ringo Starr (I think they got rid of those and it's just pure tank engines now?) or what. I never watched it as a kid, but I watched old episodes on weekend mornings as a teen and just zoned out to it. All that being said, I can definitely see how someone would be creeped out by the whole lot.
