Sexist *and* uncomfortably sexual in its depiction of underage characters!

I thought Piers Anthony's biggest issue was his major pedophilic vibes...

All the Piers Anthony books I loved as a teen did not age well.

Yeah, these were always weak on plot. Xanth is full of puns, but there are similar issues with his other series that I read: Apprentice Adept and the Incarnations of Immortality.

Each had a handful of world-building concepts with promise. But the characters are bland, the plot is weak, and there’s a thorough sprinkling of gross sexism and sexualizing women and young girls throughout.

I wish someone could do more interesting things with the underlying ideas. But it doesn’t even look like there’s much in the way of fanfiction.

I remember reading the first Apprentice Adept book and thinking it was such a cool idea, having a parallel sci-fi and fantasy world!

And then I read it as an adult and wow Stile really has no fewer than three women falling over him, but only the human one actually matters. That's. That's something. Never bothered looking at the rest of the series.

I didn’t get very far in the series, I think, and I remember very little of the actual plot.

It might be kind of banal, but the main thing that stuck with me was the tournament set-up in the sci-fi world. I really liked that whole strategy of how you and your opponent get to negotiate the activity that you’ll be competing in: each taking turns to specify the type of competition, the environment, the equipment, etc.

The Xanth books are weird and sexist and but mostly I always liked them for the puns. The Incarnations of Immortality, I really, really liked for the concepts behind a lot of it. I liked the way the incarnations were handled. I liked the basic point. I liked that War (pretty sure it was War) had a stutter. I cannot tell you a single thing about the actual plot. Just that I really liked the basic premise of the characters.

I was super into Incarnations of Immortality as a kid. A lot about it is weird in retrospect, but if one isn't aware of Piers Anthony being weird in general, it's easy for it to slip under the radar.

As someone who has never heard of these books, I'm confused but very curious about what "a terrible case of "when will they get to the fireworks factory?"" means. Anyone mind explaining?

From Wiktionary:

“get to the fireworks factory”

(fandom slang, idiomatic) To reach the most interesting, eventful or important part of a storyline.

Etymology:
From the 1997 Simpsons episode "The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show", which shows an episode of the fictional Itchy & Scratchy Show in which the characters' journey to a fireworks factory is interrupted by the anticlimactic arrival of a new character, Poochie.

For some more specific context, the Xanth books often focus on a character (or group of characters) who have to go through quite a long journey on their way to their goal. There are little plot events along the way, but they rarely build on each other and the story can feel pretty drawn-out.

Ooh, I see. Thanks!
