As someone who has never heard of these books, I'm confused but very curious about what "a terrible case of "when will they get to the fireworks factory?"" means. Anyone mind explaining?

From Wiktionary:

“get to the fireworks factory”

(fandom slang, idiomatic) To reach the most interesting, eventful or important part of a storyline.

Etymology:
From the 1997 Simpsons episode "The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show", which shows an episode of the fictional Itchy & Scratchy Show in which the characters' journey to a fireworks factory is interrupted by the anticlimactic arrival of a new character, Poochie.

For some more specific context, the Xanth books often focus on a character (or group of characters) who have to go through quite a long journey on their way to their goal. There are little plot events along the way, but they rarely build on each other and the story can feel pretty drawn-out.
