This makes no sense to me

People find fandom friends based on similar likes, often that means the same characters they like or the same pairings or 'ships. Putting those descriptors in your profiles helps find others that like the same things. "I'm a stucky shipper" isn't an Identity, it's shorthand for saying how they participate in fandom and what they like.
